Terri_F Sep 30, 2010 1:15 PM (in response to mikeobe)Here's a pretty easy to understand explanation:
http://www.unisa.edu.au/printing/New/LVL3/pixel-vs-vector.asp
Edit: The above is more a discussion of the vector based images vs pixel based images but the concept of vector vs pixel is the same.
Or are you asking why would anyone want to rasterize type or a shape?
One reason you might want to rasterize would be if you wanted to apply a filter to the type or shape. Yeah, I know there are other ways to do this...but you asked for some reasons someone might want to do it. You might also want to apply one of the tools from the toolbox directly on the type or shape. Personally, I don't recall ever rasterizing for that reason but somewhere there's probably someone doing it.

5. Re: OK, Now Don't Laugh too Loud-What is Rasterize, Purpose?
Gyno-jiz Sep 30, 2010 1:39 PM (in response to mikeobe)With regard to smart objects (probably where you'll encounter the term in photography applications within Photoshop), it means to commit a smart object to pixels -- to remove its smart object capabilities -- and make it just another layer.
See more about that here:

mikeobe Sep 30, 2010 2:06 PM (in response to Gyno-jiz)Oh, OH, that brings up another Dumb question! Smart Object, I thto that was a file within a file, a Layer embedded within another layer, if you will?
