problem with cfajaxproxy

I copied cfajaxproxy demos exactly and created my own. the cfdebug screen shows the cfc being called with the correct invocation response. But the response never makes it back to the browser. My setCallbackHandler never seems to get called. Anyway to debug that? setErrorHandler never gets called either.
