Mylenium Oct 7, 2010 1:56 AM (in response to AudoWarp)That's not going anywhere. Graphics card, driver version, screenshots! If your card isn't up to snuff and the Accelerate Effects Using... option in the prefs is set to OpenGL, this could be perfectly normal - the card simply switches back to an older version of OpenGL.

AudoWarp Oct 7, 2010 7:51 AM (in response to Mylenium)GTX 480, latest driver. Why would the noise look completely different while scrubbing, or when open GL is set to "Always On"? Of course, I can turn it off, but it just seems messed up.

Mylenium Oct 7, 2010 8:15 AM (in response to AudoWarp)Well, that's between and your NVidia driver. That's all there is to it. Hardware acceleration is tricky and you are running a card that didn't exist while CS5 was developed, so nobody could test for potential issues. I know that's not what you wanna hear, but you are pretty much on your own and between installing different driver versions to fiddling with configuration options it's all your own fun. Even if the card was tested, you could still run a specific configuration that would yield the same issues. It's the nature of the beast. In any case, AE is far from dependent on OpenGL, so simply turning it off is always an option and on a reasonably new processor, there is almost no noticable difference in realtime performance.

Todd_Kopriva Oct 7, 2010 10:11 AM (in response to Mylenium)To summarize:
The OpenGL renderer is a preview renderer for rough animations only and does not give the same results as the main (CPU/software) renderer. Don't use OpenGL for anything that you care about the appearance of.

AudoWarp Oct 7, 2010 3:44 PM (in response to AudoWarp)Okay. It seems kind of wierd, but what do I know.
Do quadro cards offer an Open GL advantage?

I hate to be blunt, but here it is:
Don't think about OpenGL and After Effects. Just turn it off for all but the OpenGL - Interactive setting in Fast Previews. Focus your money and attention on much more important aspects of getting good performance out of After Effects, like RAM, CPUs, fast hard disks, and various other settings.
