How make Cut-Out with Clipping Path?

    Mark A Goodwin Community Member

      Hi, Some help please?

I have to provide a pic of an object that has been described as a 'Cut Out' and a Clipping Path is to be included. Now I know this is not an uncommon requirement, but I have never been asked for it before.  I have tried to complete the request but unfortunately I have been thus far unsuccessful.

OK...so using CS5. I have cut out the object using the pen tool (selected then removed background). I saved the path as a 'selection'. But, what I have difficulty understanding is this.

The requirement is for a jpeg. And I know that if I flatten the file and save as a jpeg, I will lose the transparency background and the item will be on a white background. So if I send this file how does the recipient locate the clipping path - which I am presuming is the path that I saved in the Paths tab?  Because when I flatten, I will lose any Paths or Channels. The pic that they have will be of an object of the necessary dimensions they asked for, but it will be on a white background, therefore it will not be able to just 'Place' as a single item in whatever artwork they need it for.

Other items have been supplied by other people and their file is a jpeg and it says that it includes a clipping path.  So I understand that  it can be done, but I just can't work it out!

Some times I feel so dumb!

Any help will be very much appreciated

      Thanks in advance

I don't think you can embed a clipping path in a jpg, but you can send a png

with transparency to suit web or low end print. (not recommended).

Usual method is .psd or .tiff with transparency or clipping path embedded.

cs_gott_typo_24-bg_1010Because when I flatten, I will lose any Paths or Channels.

            What gave you that idea?

JPEG can contain paths, so what’s the problem?

I saved the path as a 'selection'.

Paths are Paths, not Selections – so what are you doing?

I have cut out the object using the pen tool (selected then removed background).

By deleting the surrounding areas (or filling them with white) you introduce an additional problem, namely that white may creep in at the edges.

Ideally you should instead manually create a bleed, but in any case I would advise against unnecessarily damaging the image.

Edit: To illustrate that point see attached screenshots (left: by removing/filling surrounding areas with white the pixels on the path’s edge are changed; right: a bleed should ascertain that possible registration deviations in cutting have less effect on the edges)
