1. Re: Rumor: nVidia GTX 580 shows up in December, 2010
Harm Millaard Oct 16, 2010 1:41 AM (in response to jabloomf1230)I have read this too, but from other sources. It was not enough to get me excited. As long as MPE rendering does not show any benefit from a GTX 480 with 480 cores over a GTX 285 with half the cores, lower clock speed and less memory, one can't expect any noticeable gains from the 580.

jabloomf1230 Oct 16, 2010 8:43 AM (in response to Harm Millaard)I agree, the announcement is probably just nVidia's way of keeping up with AMD, over which company has the fastest flagship video card.

jabloomf1230 Oct 22, 2010 10:40 AM (in response to jabloomf1230)Not a rumor anymore. The GTX 580 will be faster than the GTX 480, use less power and run a bit cooler. There will also be a less expensive companion, tentatively named the GTX 560:

Bill Hunt Oct 22, 2010 10:49 AM (in response to jabloomf1230)Interesting, a new card comes out BEFORE I have purchased the previous version! That never happens to me.
Not sure if there will be any real world benefits with NLE work in PrPro (Harm will probably be testing one soon?), but at least I still have the option.
Thanks,
Hunt

JSS1138 Oct 22, 2010 11:10 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)If it runs cooler and doesn't sound like a jet engine taking off, that'll be an improvement.
Although admittedly more of a psychological one than a performance one.
