1. Re: Can I repair the ntdll.dll fault that prevents InDesign CS4 from opening in Windows 7?
P Spier Oct 26, 2010 3:20 PM (in response to CarwenK)Are you able to read any of the startup messages in the splash screen? if so, what's the last one displayed before the crash?

2. Re: Can I repair the ntdll.dll fault that prevents InDesign CS4 from opening in Windows 7?
CarwenK Oct 26, 2010 4:25 PM (in response to P Spier)I just attempted this several times to make sure I was observing correctly. The only message I see is "Registering 218 plug-ins" and then the Windows error box pops up. If I slide it aside, I can see only ""Reg", the rest of the line is blacked out. I do not install plug-ins, so I'm assuming these "come with" ID. Interesting, though - you think this is a clue?
I'm a newbie on the forum, and now I see a question behaves differently from a post. Pls let me know if I erred in posting my problem this way.

3. Re: Can I repair the ntdll.dll fault that prevents InDesign CS4 from opening in Windows 7?
P Spier Oct 26, 2010 4:08 PM (in response to CarwenK)No, you're fine. When and if we all figure out what's going on you can award some points and or mark the question as answered to help other users find what they need.
The 218 plugins is indeed part of the normal startup. ID is basically just a whole pile of plugins. Sometimes it helps to kno, though justhaow far the normal startup gets before failure.
See if you can find the SING plugin. It should be in the InDesign application folder under \plugins\text. Rename it by adding an underscore in front of the name, then see if ID will start.

CarwenK Oct 26, 2010 4:25 PM (in response to P Spier)Sorry, no luck. Are there any other non-essentials I can methodically exclude?

5. Re: Can I repair the ntdll.dll fault that prevents InDesign CS4 from opening in Windows 7?
P Spier Oct 26, 2010 4:24 PM (in response to CarwenK)Might be, but that's the usual one that causes trouble, so I think we can say that isn't the problem and wait to hear from some Win7 users.
Forgot to mention that you should remove your personal contact info from the email replies. This all winds up on the web. I'll take care of the earlier posts.

6. Re: Can I repair the ntdll.dll fault that prevents InDesign CS4 from opening in Windows 7?
CarwenK Oct 26, 2010 5:25 PM (in response to P Spier)I just tried the Recovery Folder solution, where you delete the contents of the folder. This sounded promising, because the first time ID crashed, a document was open. When I launched ID again, the doc was recovered. I closed it without saving changes, after which ID crashed. After that point, ID never got beyond the splash screen. There were two items in the folder (see screenshot), but alas, no joy.

Thanks Peter for the cleanup - I had not spent any time reading the forum how-to (and I write user docs).

7. Re: Can I repair the ntdll.dll fault that prevents InDesign CS4 from opening in Windows 7?
CarwenK Nov 3, 2010 1:23 PM (in response to P Spier)Although I still don't know the cause, I was able to resolve the problem today. I completely uninstalled InDesign again, but this time I restarted my machine before continuing. Windows wanted to do a chkdsk so I went to lunch. When I came back, my login screen was available, no errors visible.
I have two CS4 setup packages on my machine, copied from an internal server per out IT. One has the January date on which I did the original install; one is a later date. I installed from the latter and it failed. As instructed in the message, I exited Setup, restarted, and did the install again. This time I used the January package. Success! So it seems there was some underlying Windows problem that was somehow resolved without replacing suspect files. I just had to delete the new SING plug-in, since the existing one you advised me to disable was still there. Thanks Peter for your assistance. I think the lesson learned was that if I uninstall, restart afterward just to have a clean slate.
