Moving from GoLive CS2 to DW CS5

    Mike Guilbault Community Member

I muddled through GoLive a few years ago to create my website and now need to update it.  Thing is, much has changed and I'm way behind.

My first question, is there an easy way to move my website from GL CS2 to DW CS5 (I think I already know the answer to that one).

And if not, what Doc type should I be using to start a new site document?  Can a usable site be developed in HTML5 yet or should I stick with XHTML 1.0 Transitional?  (Don't really know what that means anyway!)  This is the first I've heard of HTML5.  Is that the first decision I need to make to get started?

BTW, the site is for professional photography and I will require lots of images, galleries of images, and information pages.

Yes, and no.  There is a GL2DW extension available from Adobe that may work for you (it may even be on your CS5 CD) -

          http://www.adobe.com/products/golive/pdfs/GL2DWD_Final.pdf

I believe you can also find it on the Adobe Exchange.

I have heard of mixed success with this extension, and have never used it myself.  Failing all of that, you can really just open your pages and begin editing them after defining your site in DW.  The pages will contain lots of GL legacy (invalid) HTML usages, but the will still work.

And if not, what Doc type should I be using to start a new site document?

One that is consistent with your skill and knowledge of HTML.  I suggest HTML 4.01 Transitional until you are at a comfort level with HTML that would warrant an upgrade in the doctype.  And yes, choosing a doctype is the first decision you should make.

Can a usable site be developed in HTML5 yet or should I stick with XHTML 1.0 Transitional?

Stick with the HTML 4.01 Transitional for now.  It'll be fine.  The point is to build pages that validate according to your selected doctype.  That way the W3 Validator becomes a VERY useful tool for you - layout issues should always be first attacked by validating the page. You'd be surprised how easy it is to perform actions in DW that can result in invalid HTML, especially if you are working in Code view without good HTML skills.

            Very helpful Murray.  Thank you!

I'll check out the GL2DW extension on a smaller site I have and see how that works.

It may take me a while... but I'll let you know.  I'm also in the middle of moving my studio this month - too much going on all at once but I've got to get to work on the website too! I need to clone myself!! lol

If you are having problems, I recommend you join our brand new mailing list for the oldtimer GoLivers that still hang around, most of whom have done the conversion from GoLive in one way or the other. We just moved our mailinglist from Lassosoft to another host. You can join it here <http://glhlists.com/golive/> . Mailinglist is brand new since yesterday and populated by the oldtimers from the old GoLive mailing list at Lassosoft. It's the right place to ask questions about migration. List nowadays is not really about GoLive but most of us have that background.
