1. Re: Keywords & Folders?
JW Stephenson Oct 27, 2010 1:29 PM (in response to mikeobe)Several possibilities:
1. I think folders is a field you can select in Smart Collections so you could search there by editing the smart collection each time (a double click);
2. You could have (or write) a routine using the SDK that does exactly that (LR3 and above);
3. I think there is a routine by Rob Cole that allows you to create shadow fields for filtering and collections that you could have include folder name.

2. Re: Keywords & Folders?
mikeobe Oct 27, 2010 4:29 PM (in response to JW Stephenson)Well, this is just a hobby for me, certainly not a pro, family pictures, etc! I've thrown a bunch of pictures in and now after a few years thot I'd better try to organize a Tad??:) I'm going to try to set up a Hierarchy with Folders first, then see if I can keyword the folders to get me there! That should be enough!
OH, at the risk of sounding like a complete idiot about this stuff, which I pretty well am, what's a SDK?
Thank you for your help!

It is my opinion that keywords offer you advantages that folders do not. Specifically, you can assign as many keywords to photos as you want; while a photo can only be in one folder. Therefore, the task you have defined of assinging a keyword (singular) to a folder seems both redundant (there is no point having both a folder and a keyword to identify the exact same group of photos) and inefficient.
It is also my opinion that setting up a hierarchy of folders for the purpose of organization is not a good use of your (or anyone's) time. (It may be useful to put all folders under a single parent folder for ease of backup, but that's entirely different.) If you are trying to get organized, I suggest you use the most powerful tool you have, which is keywords, and not move your folders any further. Leave the folders where they are ... do not move them any more (except for ease of backup as I discussed, or when you need to move them to another HD); instead use keywords for organization and search.

mikeobe Oct 28, 2010 11:46 AM (in response to dj_paige)Well, I was trying to group into various folders, instead of having to "Keyword," every picture, LAZY!:)
Always trying to find "Quick & Easy!":)
Example would be "Family" as a folder! Looking for shortcuts and I think what you are saying to do it right there are no real shortcuts!!
Thanks Again,
You and Everyone esle!

But its so much easier to add a "Family" keyword to those same photos.
No, I was not saying "there are no real shortcuts". I was saying that keywords — plural — are indeed the “shortcuts” you want to use.
