Are there drawbacks to using Smart Objects?

    RichPate Community Member

I know using Smart Objects greatly increases your file size and can slow down your workflow a bit when you need to do pixel-editing on the Smart Object layer.

      1. Are there any other considerations before using Smart Objects in your editing workflow?

      2. Would you ever want to change your Smart Object layer back to a regular layer(s), and if so, why?

      3. Is it best to do all your pixel-editing first, and then change the layer(s) to a Smart Object for transforms, filters, etc.?

      Thanks.

          Hello!

1)Compatibility with non-adobe apps (but saving with compatibility on is supposed to alleviate that)

Normally, the files should be compatible with older versions of Photoshop.

I don't know about Photoshop Elements

2)if I want to do some painting on the smart object (but I would work on a copy, and Keep the SO)

3)it depends if you want to have several instances of the SO, what you want to do on the SO.

Remember that SOs can be raw files, vector files, files of different bit depth, etc.
