1. Re: Missing Fonts in PDF rush print job!
Stix Hart Nov 4, 2010 12:29 AM (in response to mckayk_777-PN6kWE)What you don't do is use Illustrator! Hard to say without seeing the job but what I'd do is place it in Indesign and try and add the bleeds from there. Mostly you can place it on a page the same size, copy, paste in place, crop it to a sliver of the edge of the page and then stretch that sliver to give you fake bleed. Even on pictures! Try it and see!
If it is a picture my next step would be to open it in Acrobat and try and make two PDFs, one with the background, one with the rest. Then combine them again in Indesign, leaving the rest the same size but enlarging the background. Much easier if you have Enfocus Pitstop Pro, but maybe possible with the Acrobat Object Touchup tool.

P Spier Nov 4, 2010 5:08 AM (in response to mckayk_777-PN6kWE)You buy the fonts.
And bill the client, as well as instructing them on proper preparation of the artwork so this doesn't happen again.
@ Stix --
I don't see opeing in Illy as a problem here, necessarily. I read this as linked Illustrator art with included text that needs adjusting.

BobLevine Nov 4, 2010 5:35 AM (in response to P Spier)I'm not sure which of you is right. My initial reaction was the same as Stix'...Don't use Illy to edit a PDF.
But I can see how Peter read it as it being an Illustrator file saved as PDF in which case opening in Illy is just fine.
And so is the advice to buy the font and bill the client.

P Spier Nov 4, 2010 5:49 AM (in response to BobLevine)Well I didn't see PDF mentioned anywhere at all in the original post, so I presumed we were talking about a .indd file. If it's a PDF, best thing probably is to place it in ID and fake the bleed however you have to unless it opens perfectly in Illy and you have the fonts.

mckayk_777-PN6kWE Nov 4, 2010 6:58 AM (in response to P Spier)Yes it is a PDF and it seems the best method is to fake the bleed.
Thank you all for the help!

bpylant Nov 4, 2010 8:30 AM (in response to mckayk_777-PN6kWE)Why do customers (and/or their designers) always disappear right after dropping off an important/rush project? I can't tell you how many times we've had to put jobs on hold for issues with the art files, only to be told that their designer is out of the country for six weeks... I didn't realize so many designers got paid so well!

p taz Nov 4, 2010 1:51 PM (in response to bpylant)How about advanced edit in Acrobat? I find that about 70% of the time, I can alter a background pic or block to create the bleed...
