1. Re: Intermittent monitor profile loading issue
Noel Carboni Nov 24, 2010 3:16 PM (in response to DVDmike)Just to confirm, when you say "Everything looks red", do the colors look wrong across the board or just in color-managed applications?
Color-management is a two-part process. Gamma settings are loaded into the video drivers at startup/login to effectively calibrate your gamma, and the monitor color profile is used by color-managed apps to fine tune the colors.
Assuming your answer is "even non-color-managed applications are affected", then it's the gamma settings load that seems fouled up.
To me that sounds like a possible video driver issue, or a conflict with software and the system...
Is this Monico device starting any software at login that's supposed to load the calibration settings? Is it advertised to be Windows 7 compatible?
Are your video drivers up to date?

2. Re: Intermittent monitor profile loading issue
DVDmike Nov 24, 2010 3:25 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Yes, the colors look red in all applications. I first notice it by opening up a windows explorer or internet explorer window.
The Nvidia drivers are up to date.
I do not think that the Monico Optix is officialy supported on Win 7. But there is a win7 x64 driver for the calibration device.
Everything had been working for several months and this problem only started happening a few weeks back. It could be the software is not loading the profiles at startup. But since it had been working for some time and I had not updated the monico software, something else (new) must be conflicting with the software? Is there anyone else that is using the monico optix software on Win 7 X64?

3. Re: Intermittent monitor profile loading issue
emil emil Nov 24, 2010 4:15 PM (in response to DVDmike)note: I wrote the following reply after seeing only your original post without the reply from Noel, but I was interrupted and didn't post it on time. So, now some of it may be redundant
I don't know what the problem is but to narrow the focus on it, in case you don't know this, a monitor profile, unlike all other device color profiles, can also contain calibration information that the system uses to calibrate each connected monitor on startup. Usually this kind of monitor color profiles are those created by monitor profiling programs using a sampling device like the one you have. So there are two things that may get wrong (corrupted or not functioning properly). One is the monitor calibration information and the other is the profiling information used by the color managed programs. If the problem is with the functionality of the calibration information this will affect (alter) your entire monitor display in a way how it is affected if using its hardware controls to alter its display. If it is the profiling information then the problem will be limited to the display of the color managed programs.
Unfortunately, i don't have any ideas what could be causing this. If no one else is able to help here, if it is me, first l'd try to make sure that there is no other software on the computer that is trying to interfere with the calibration settings and then I will contact and ask for help the company that provided the monitor profiling software.

4. Re: Intermittent monitor profile loading issue
DVDmike Nov 24, 2010 4:40 PM (in response to emil emil)Thanks all for the information. I am positive that it is not the calibration device that is the problem because simply rebooting the PC usually fixes the problem and the computer has not been recalibrated.
I think that the Monico was bought up by some other manufacturer and the product is no longer supported. So if it is the software and there are no work-around's, my only choice will be to purchase new software or keep rebooting. Luckily I can reboot in about 16 seconds (after BIOS).
(Note, is there a way to turn off this forum's spell check and simply let me use the one I have included in the browser? I hate the forum spell checker.)

5. Re: Intermittent monitor profile loading issue
Noel Carboni Nov 24, 2010 5:41 PM (in response to DVDmike)Try just logging off and on again. I'm curious whether that corrects the color problem.
Don't discount the possibility that you could have some hardware failure causing this. Probably not what you want to hear. Does turning the monitor off and on cause it to be cleared up?

6. Re: Intermittent monitor profile loading issue
DVDmike Nov 24, 2010 7:51 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Noel, logging off did fix the issue when I logged back in tonight. And it only takes a few seconds to log off and in. So I think that this eliminates a hardware problem. Its not likely that logging in again would "fix" a hardware issue with my video card. Turning off and on the monitor does not help.
Thanks!

7. Re: Intermittent monitor profile loading issue
Noel Carboni Nov 25, 2010 6:49 AM (in response to DVDmike)That says the reload of the gamma tables/curves does clear up the problem.
I'm thinking the current video drivers simply have a bug. You might have to continue working around this problem until nVidia releases a new set. I'd definitely report it to them, and make sure you include all the details (e.g., that you have two monitors, and on which monitor it's failing, etc.).
Does it only happen while using Photoshop?
If so, does changing the OpenGL settings (e.g., the Advanced modes) help?

8. Re: Intermittent monitor profile loading issue
DVDmike Nov 25, 2010 6:55 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)When it fails, it can be either or both monitors. I have not tried the "advanced" driver settings for fear that I might mess something else up. And yes, all applications fail to provide proper color whenever this issue happens. Its as if I am looking through a red filter when I am using the computer.
Thank you for posting.

9. Re: Intermittent monitor profile loading issue
Noel Carboni Nov 25, 2010 6:58 AM (in response to DVDmike)Well, I was specifically asking whether actually USING Photoshop was causing the problem, or is it just random.
And if the answer was yes, I was suggesting changing the OpenGL settings in Photoshop, specifically.-Noel

10. Re: Intermittent monitor profile loading issue
DVDmike Nov 25, 2010 7:17 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)Sorry, I misunderstood. When the problem starts it happens right after boot w/o ever going into Photoshop.

11. Re: Intermittent monitor profile loading issue
Dennis 1111 Nov 25, 2010 9:51 AM (in response to DVDmike)I am going to repeat a question that was more-or-less asked earlier: Are you using a Monaco utility to load the profile on start-up (would likely be in your Startup directory) or are you letting Win7 load it?
Win7 (and Vista) generally work better if you let the OS load the profile. When a special utility loads the profile, it will often be lost during special screen operations (like the dark screen security warnings). When Windows does the loading, it does a better job of making sure the profile stays active.
Here is a good link that explains the process if you aren't already doing it:
http://www.pusztaiphoto.com/articles/colormgmt/win7/default.aspx
Make sure you disable the Monaco load utility so it doesn't try to "double-load" the profile. Sometimes this is as simple as moving the shortcut out of the Startup directory or deleting it.
I am not 100% that this is the problem in your case since your explanation seems to indicate some confusing behavior, but it's probably worth reviewing the info above to make sure.
