mckayk_777-PN6kWE Dec 1, 2010 5:15 PM (in response to BobLevine)Not what I need.
That method is too open for errors to happen, and a little more time consuming.
I want to place a pdf 8 times, and all the time it takes is just 8 clicks of the mouse.
Is there a script anyone knows of that asks how many times you would like to place the same artwork.

mckayk_777-PN6kWE Dec 1, 2010 5:49 PM (in response to mckayk_777-PN6kWE)Ok have semi answered my own question here.
Instead of Export from Indesign to get multi copies of the same page, or having indesign place multi copies of the same page, Print the file to PDF selecting in the print dialog how many copies needed and turning on Collate, it seems without collate on indesign only prints one copy of the file.
Now how do you specify the location the file will be saved to it seems that Indesign wants to keep saving to my desktop.

Not any more open to errors, and probably less so, than setting up to place 8 times. How are you proposing to position the 8 PDFs?
Step and repeat in CS5 will allow you to open one dialog, specify precise distances to move horizontally and vertically, specify how many columns and/or rows you want to repeat, preview the result, and make a grid in one click by pressing OK. It took me longer to type this than it would have to make an 8-up, perfectly aligned layout.

6. Re: Place Single Page PDF Multi Times into a template
mckayk_777-PN6kWE Dec 2, 2010 2:43 PM (in response to P Spier)I have set up a template with Place holders for the pdf to be placed in, then to place the pdf all i have to do is click inside each of the place holders and wala they are there.
So on my 8up template i have all my required items ie: colour bars, crop marks, and guides all on their own layers, and the 8 boxes on their own layer, I import the PDF loading my curser, click on a box and artwork is placed exactly where I need it to be.
You are right about step and repeat being one way of doing this, but I think my way if I can work it out will be even faster, no mesurements to remember no typing just 8 quick clicks.
If by any chance I need more then 8 up adding a page is no problems the boxes are on the master page and I just release the objects on the artwork layer and its ready to go again as many times as I need it.
What do you think of the idea to Print to PDF is this a lower quality way of making the PDF.

P Spier Dec 2, 2010 3:05 PM (in response to mckayk_777-PN6kWE)Since I don't know a way to load the same file into the place gun 8 times simultaneously I think the discussion is pretty moot. You might be able to script it, but that's out of my expertise.
The only time I use print to PDF is with the student newspaper I coach which is staffed with users who have no idea what they are doing. Printing to PDF allows me to use the same procedure (select a preset) to produce both grayscale and color PDFs from the ID file no matter what color space the images might be using. If ID could export to grayscale I'd do that instead.
There is no way these students are sophisticated enough to convert a file to grayscale in Acrobat, so printing to PDF is the only reliable way of getting a press-ready file without my having to be there looking over someone's shoulder. I hate getting calls from the printer at 8:00 a.m. on a Monday morning...

rob day Dec 2, 2010 3:49 PM (in response to mckayk_777-PN6kWE)You could export the pdf and include the printer marks. That would simplify your template and make the step and repeat option work. So, in this case I exported a PDF/X1-a of a document that included all bleeds and marks, then used CS5's step and repeat grid feature with the placed PDF's dimensions as th offsets:
