1. Re: Option required to view IDML files
Lil Red Frog Dec 9, 2010 3:53 AM (in response to Praveen10)Well the main purpose of IDML files is to be able to open, in CS4, a file created in CS5. Hence, there is an obvious tool that allows you to preview IDML files: InDesign CS4 (and CS5)...
The purpose of the EPUB is completely different. This is a file that is destined to be read by another application, IDML is made by InDesign for an earlier version of InDesign.
I'm might be mistaking but I don't see the purpose of having a preview app for this.
For more info about this file format: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/408/kb408054.html
In which situations have you had to work with IDML?

2. Re: Option required to view IDML files
Praveen10 Dec 9, 2010 4:07 AM (in response to Lil Red Frog)Hi,
Thanks for the response.
Actually our aim is to create/update/automate the InDesign files using IDML without using InDesign application. In this case, we need a tool to edit the IDML files and to preview the output without opening the IDML in InDesign.
Pl. .suggest now.
Thanks,
Praveen

3. Re: Option required to view IDML files
Lil Red Frog Dec 9, 2010 4:17 AM (in response to Praveen10)Hello again,
I see... Hmmm...
Is there a specific reason why it needs to be an IDML file that you would need to have edited? Or could it be any kind of file, as long as it's a file that can be edited out of InDesign?
The other problem that you will encounter is that there are new functions, features, etc implemented into each new version of an application (obviously). These new functions not being supported in previous version (since they didn't exist) won't be exported into the IDML file. You may get strange results layout wise (and most probably other ones) once opening and editing the IDML file...
I've been confronted to one of them very recently and, in this case, it was easily fixed because I use again the file in CS5 once the work done with the IDML is finished (<< this is the long story short).
You might use functions while creating your file in CS5 that you don't necessarily know as being new (you might even use a lot of them, who knows) and these won't be exported into the IDML.
May I ask what your workflow is exactly? And the exact purpose intended? Maybe there would be a work around for your case...
