Which Blu-ray players play Encore BDs?

    imagex ideas Community Member

Other threads in this forum state that only some consumer Blu-ray players will play BD-R disks authored by Encore.  As I understand the situation, it has to do with a copy-protection code present in commercial Blu-ray disks but not on "amateur" disks burned on PC-mounted burners, and the insistence of some players, but not all, on finding that code.  In my experience BDs authored by Encore CS5 and burned on my LG BH10LS30 burner will play on a Panasonic SC-BT100 player and a Samsung BD-C5500 player, but not an LG BD390 player.

Is there a list of which players will play BD-Rs without the commercial copy protection code?  Or is there a way, other than buy-and-try to determine this information?  A claim to handle BD-R media appears insufficient since the LG player above makes that claim but rejects the same disks played by the other two.

All i can say is try a different brand of BluRay disk.

I've got a el cheapo BR player and it even plays BD-RE without any problems. I use Verbatim.

Not sure if there is a list compiled anywhere, but my general feeling is that as the players mature, more and more BD-Rs from various authoring sources will play in consumer set-top players with no problem.  Personally, I think any new player off the shelf will work as it's not an Encore issue but a player issue.

I took the "try and buy" approach instead of "buy and try."  The sales people were very accommodating.  Before I started running my mouth to friends about kicking out BD-Rs that I was editing, I took my first BD-R to the Sony outlet store here in Camarillo, CA to make sure it played OK on their new players.  Then I took it to a relative's house to play in their LGs.  All was well so I invested more in the process, and in a Sony player.

To be safe, I've adopted a standard for discs that are playing back well for me...

            Vertbatim BD-R discs (2X discs - and I don't burn faster than 2X)

            MP2 for BluRay

            23 mbps video (max)

            380 kbps audio

My data rates keep everything under 25 mbps which seems to be a magic number for BD-Rs in set top players, but still high enough that it is close to my source video and looks good.

            So far I've been happy.

            Best of luck,

Probably should have mentioned in my first post, but my productions are all on Verbatim BD-Rs 4x.  This seems to be the standard and in any case could not be responsible when the same disk plays in one player and not another.

I agree that the trend is probably to drop the copy-protection requirement for BD-R disks in new players, but since we aren't there yet it would be nice to be able to tell friends and family which players NOT to buy.

Pyramid Pro - Which store let you try your disk in players?  None I've found in my area do.

Sony Outlet in Camarillo, CA.  The sales guys are on commission which probably helps.  I just told him my exact purpose and goal.

In my case it was one player on one TV.

I'm thinking if you just ask your local shop they would do the same (hopefully).
