1. Re: Divide a circle in 3 seperate segments
Mellifluous-Irony Dec 11, 2010 8:57 PM (in response to mhossey)You might just need to select everything and go to:
Object→ Ungroup
Or right click and choose it there.

I would use pathfinders 'Divide' for what you are trying to do. But I'm on PC with CS5. Maybe Subtract is exactly what you need.
I don't seem to need to use the Path→Outline Stroke step.

3. Re: Divide a circle in 3 seperate segments
Mellifluous-Irony Dec 11, 2010 9:08 PM (in response to mhossey)I've played around with it, and seem to get random results. Sometimes it does split them into different shapes, othertimes it does not. You might try remaking it. I'm not sure if the shape of the curve has anything to do with it, or if the curved paths need to end outside of the shape.

4. Re: Divide a circle in 3 seperate segments
Mellifluous-Irony Dec 11, 2010 9:11 PM (in response to mhossey)Does subtract work with the expand button? Or is it an auto-finalized action? Your shape might still be in 'live mode'.

5. Re: Divide a circle in 3 seperate segments
mhossey Dec 11, 2010 10:47 PM (in response to Mellifluous-Irony)hmm it seems were getting closer. I tried remaking it 3 or 4 times with different techniques to no avail...but i did however subtract and then hit "expand" I noticed that it gave individual anchor points for each section of the circle. Before it just left the anchor points visable on all the seperate curves, and the curves extend beyond the circle....
But it still doesnt actually seperate the circle into 3 seperate segments. i.e. there is a square box around the whole circle when I click anywhere in the circle. However like I mentioned were getting closer! Now I have anchor points to manipulate each section
I'm just kind of trying things here and their...but thankyou for your help so far

6. Re: Divide a circle in 3 seperate segments
mhossey Dec 11, 2010 11:04 PM (in response to mhossey)I realize that I can now just use the direct select tool and shift click each anchor point that is on
the desired chunk of the circle i want to manipulate...but that seems a bit tedious at times. I'm going to be using gradients and fills etc... Is there anyway to get a selection box around each chunk of the circle? right now it selects the entire circle and shows all the seperate anchor points for each chunk.

9. Re: Divide a circle in 3 seperate segments
Mellifluous-Irony Dec 11, 2010 11:19 PM (in response to mhossey)In CS5 we can select the group and select the "Live Paint Bucket" which would surely pick out those three shapes.

10. Re: Divide a circle in 3 seperate segments
tromboniator Dec 11, 2010 11:34 PM (in response to Mellifluous-Irony)That's fine for coloring them, but I assumed that "segments that are each able to be manipulated on their own" meant moving, resizing or reshaping.
