Acrobat Printer Freezes on Save when CTL+V is used

    RS5513 Community Member

When printing to Adobe PDF, the "Save PDF File As" dialogue box will not allow the pasting of text in the File Name field. Whenever you hit ctl+v to paste text in this field, Acrobat printer crashes and takes down the print spooler with it, requiring a restart to do any printing.

This issue has been around since Acrobat 9 was introduced. I hoped that 10 would resolve the issue, but it did not, Other PDFprinters do not suffer from this issue.

      Specs: Windows 7 64-bit, 6G RAM, 128GB SSD, core i-7.

          No problem with Acrobat X.

Would you care to elaborate? Are you implying that the source of the problem lies with the OS? The problem occurs with Acrobat X and  is quite easily demonstrated, as it happens every time...

I don't have the problem with Acrobat X on Windows XP 32bit.

So the problem is potentially with Acrobat installed on:

                Windows Vista

                Windows 7

                64-bit OS

Nonetheless, the problem has existed for some time and was not addressed with the release of Acrobat X.

Bump to this thread, as the issue is still outstanding. Some input from Adobe would be helpful.

                    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

                    Hi Guys,

I also found this problem.  I run Acrobat 9 Standard with Windows 7 Professional and the printer hung eveything up when trying to print from Explorer 8 just as others have said. I tried repairing Abobe and other fixes I could think of but nothing worked.  Having used Adobe Acrobat Professional on an earlier laptop I know what should work and it simply wasn't working.

I solved the problem as follows and hope this helps others:

From Explorer 8 make sure the Adobe PDF for the menu bar is selected so you have the Adobe menu available.  Mine has options of "Convert" and "Select" for example.  Right clicking on the Explorer 8 menur bar should let you see what menus are active. When trying to print a page I found that if I used the "Convert" option and "Convert page to PDF format" what happened was McAfee (which I use as my virus checker) aksed if I wanted to allow Abobe 9 to connect automatically to Explorer 8 / internet and I selected "Always".  This message came up despite having earlier allowed Adobe Acrobat to make automatic updates etc.

Since then I have not had the problem again and can print using any of the following print commands:

                    • right click and use print or print preview and select Adobe PDF from the printer options
                    • Use the "Convert" pull down menu on the Explorer 8 Adobe bar as described above
                    • operate the print page button on a web page
                    • use Explorer 8's own print icon and via print preview select the Adobe PDF printer if I want
                    • select Adobe PDF printer as a printer within other programs such as MS Office

If this worked on my machine its possible the firewall features on the virus protection programs may be preventing Adobe 9 communicating with the internet even though I had already trusted Adobe 9 within the McAfee trusted programs firewall option.

Recommend that the Adobe technical team bear this in mind when presenting solutions. Also rather than hang up the system please could Adobe be designed call up a menu to allow users to change their firewall settings is necessary.

Hope this helps.  Best regards to all.

I am experiencing the same problem with Acrobat Pro 9 on Windows 7 (64-bit).  It would be nice if somebody from Adobe could give some input.  Unfortunately since v9 doesn't have the convert option for FF, the stated work-around is not an option for me.  Besides which, this is a reproducible bug.  Thanks.

V10 has the same bug. My solution is not to use Acrobat for printing. Shame on Adobe that their $450, 465MB software cannot do what a free 3.8MB utility does.

                          Bumpity.

Seeing the same issue when printing from Outlook 2010 x32. If I paste into notepad first then copy the raw text and paste THAT into the filename field, it doesn't freeze.

This is definitely an issue, exactly as described.  I'm printing from Firefox with whatever printing plugin was installed with the package "Adobe Web Premium CS3.3 + Acrobat 9 Pro Upgrade", and when printing to PDF, if I use Ctrl+V to paste a value into the filename field, the window freezes and does not respond.  The only option is to terminate the host process (SPLWOW64, as identified by Microsoft Spy++), after which no futher printing can take place in Firefox until Firefox is restarted.

I'M LOSING RECEIPTS BECAUSE OF THIS.  When trying to print a reciept from online bill pay to PDF, and when pasting the numeric dollar amount into the filename field like "123.99", the damn thing freezes.  I kill the process that the PDF printer is running in (SPLWOW64), leaving Firefox running so I can print my other reciepts, however NOTHING WILL PRINT AFTER THIS HAPPENS.  When I attempt to print, I get an error message, so I have to try screen captures or print to HTML.

And the guy who said the FREE 3BM program does a better job of printing to PDF is right, and there's more than one of them.

Adobe charges its customers a ridiculous premium, this issue was reported last year, we're doing the troubleshooting for them, we've practically pinned down the cuplrit and yet this remains unaddressed. /rant

This may not be just an Adobe issue, but also a Firefox one. I have no problem pasting anything in the filename field when printing/saving something as a PDF in Internet Explorer 9 or in a 32-bit application like Word 2003.  This only happens with Firefox, regardless of the version.  Because FF is a 32-bit program, there may be something in the code that's affecting this behavior.  The best thing to do is simply not paste anything and edit the filename after it has been created.  It is a hassle, but there's no other solution other than for Mozilla to create a 64-bit version of FF (which won't happen any time this year).  (I'm sure Adobe and Mozilla are pointing blame at each other and both don't really see any reason to fix it since many people probably don't copy/paste something into the filenames.)

Besides, I find it better to save a web page as a PDF in Internet Explorer than in FF because IE preserves the layout a lot better, usually the way you see it.  FF has screwed it up on several occasions, thus wasting white space on a whole page.

The behavior as I first reported it does not necessarily involve browsers. The problem consistently occurs when using the Acrobat printer as a device from any application in Windows. Typing in the file name is a non-starter when using long referential number strings, especially when other PDF printing devices, such as CutePDF printer  (which I now use exclusively), do not have this  problem.

This migh be a problem with the printer service.  My company also has this issue however not so much with pasting in the file name, rather the freezing when printing.  We noticed that the application immediatelly responded once the application splwow62.exe was killed.  The program splwow64.exe handles printer communication from a 32 bit app on a 64 bit system.  Microsoft has a few issues with this application, you might want to check your program version.

I have this problem too and it seems to be getting worse. It started when I updated Adobe a year ago.  Now when I print the first pdf of the day, it freezes the whole computer for at least a minute. It is a standalone computer and printer, no networking (that I know of). W7, 64 bit. Acrobat 9. Thanks
