1. Re: Need clarification please - LR3 32bit vs 64bit on different machines
Hal P Anderson Dec 21, 2010 7:48 AM (in response to rollsnut)The Lightroom catalogue keeps a pointer to the images that you've imported. The pointer is a full disk address, including the drive letter. If you move your images from the laptop to your desktop and the images don't have exactly the same address on the desktop, LR won't be able to find them until you tell it where they currently are. You can do this by right-clicking on the highest level folder in LR's folder list and choosing the option that lets you locate the missing images.
I'm assuming that this is your problem; you didn't say exactly what was wrong.
In any case, it isn't a matter of 32- versus 64-bit versions.

rollsnut Dec 21, 2010 7:53 AM (in response to Hal P Anderson)Hal:
I'll try this out and respond later.
My problem is that I can open the catalog on the desktop (32bit) but none of the post-processing follows the images.
I'm glad it's not 32 vs 64 bit problem.
I'll be getting back to you.
Thanks,

dj_paige Dec 21, 2010 8:38 AM (in response to rollsnut)The processing will not follow the images unless you do either of the following:
1) Move the catalog file from one computer to another
2) Use File->Export as Catalog on one computer and File->Import as Catalog on the other computer
3) Tell Lightroom to write the metadata to the photos
I prefer #2, but depending on exactly what you are doing, the other choices might be good as well
I agree this has nothing to do wtih 32bit vs 64bit operating system

4. Re: Need clarification please - LR3 32bit vs 64bit on different machines
rollsnut Dec 21, 2010 10:18 AM (in response to dj_paige)Ok, I guess where all the rain we are getting here in So Cal has knocked somethings out, it has kicked other things in!
All I did was:
1. Drag and drop the directory\folder from my portible hard drive onto my desktop hard drive.
2. "OPEN" the catalog and all my setting\manipulations loaded just fine. Go figure....
I had done this exact thing before with no success. I did it this time thinking if all was still RAW, I'd play with the imoprt and path idea you both mentioned.
I still plan on using both of your methods to experiment and learn. The more I stub my toe, the better I learn to walk in the future.
Thank you both for your time and suggestions. It is appreciated and I'll let you know if I run into more "glitches."
Thanks again,
BAZ

Let me say that importing photos into another catalog, after you have already imported them into a different catalog, should be a last resort. Really, no need to do that.
Your best and most complete solution will be to Import From Catalog (as opposed to importing photos).
