External Editor settings don't move to photoshop

    ThornieG Community Member

In Lightroom 3.3 I have set my Additional External Editor to Photoshop.exe, TIFF, sRGB, 8 bits, 72 resolution. When I choose Edit in and choose this preset, the photo shows up in photoshop as 16 bit pro photo, which are my first settings.

I can't work out what I am doing wrong. Why aren't the settings sRGB 8 bits?

I think when LR sends files specifically to PS it always sends as 16bit ProPhoto and saves as whatever you specify in the settings.

            Thanks for the response.

I have just found that when I edit in "My Preset" I receive a dialogue box "Edit Photo with Adobe Photoshop CS5" and "Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments" is checked. I have just expanded "Copy File Options" which had the first lot of settings rather than those of my preset. So I have now changed them to the preferences that I want and they show up with these in Photoshop.

I have then made another External Editor setting and when I choose this preset I need to expand the Copy File Options again and change the settings to match those of my preset.

Rather questions the point of setting these presets if I have to change them each time I choose an additional editor. Is this supposed to happen or is it a bug in 3.3. I have been following a tutorial by Chris Orwig and in the tutorial there was no mention of this Copy File Options having to be adjusted each time.

            Really, really confused.

I know that the file is coming into PS as 16 bit or 8 bit when I look at the document size infor at the bottom of the photo in PS.

I just set up an additional external editor in LR 3.3 for PSCS5 as 8bit sRgb and when I did 'edit copy with LR adjustments' it sent an 8bit sRgb file to PS (looking at image/mode in PS). This worked on both a raw (NEF) file and a tiff.

Thanks for that Charlie. I have the same problem with jpegs and tifs. I reset all the lightroom defaults, but still have the problem. Are you working with 64 bit PS5 and LR3.3?

I haven't made any adjustments to my photos in LR, just in case that had anything to do with it. Everytime I select to edit in Additional External Editor, whether left as Custom or saved as a preset, when the Edit box comes up I need to change the Copy File Options they then remain the default options whether I select to edit in - "Adobe Photoshop PS5" or the Additional External Editor Option. The only difference being that once I change the Copy File Options, the 1st - Edit in - Option (Adobe Photoshop PS5" now takes on the new options I set in the Copy File Options. The only way I can now be sure of the file properties I want to export to Photoshop is to always select the second Edit in Option and then set the Copy File Options. In other words, no matter what I set in the preferences the file will always go to the external editor with the last settings I used in the Copy File Options.

Hope you can follow me. If you are using the same programs as I am then I am doing something wrong. Otherwise it must be a bug.

BTW I just realized that I don't have the latest updates installed for PS5. Thought I did, sorry about that. I will install the updates and let you know if that fixes my little problem.

                  Hi Charlie ,

I installed the updates to PS5 and reset my external editor preferences in LR 3.3 and , still don't quite believe it, but all worked as it should. I really thought that I must have been doing something wrong, but it was a bug after all. That will teach me to be more vigilant when it comes to making sure I apply all the updates.

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

I have been testing on a Mac, where it works fine. I just tried it on 64bit win7 and it behaves as you describe - it comes through as 16bit. It looks like it's a bug in the windows version. I'm running with the latest updates on both systems.

Weird that it now works on your system.

I agree. I just thought about it and I can't really see why updating PS5 should remove a bug that seems to be in LR 3.3. But it works now and I don't seem to have done anything else. I didn't even reboot the system.

I just checked when the updates I applied became available and they were released on the 18th December. So double check that your windows system has the latest updates.

It does have the latest PS and LR downloads, so it's weird for sure. I may play around a bit morewhen I get a chance. About the only thing I do on my win7 system any more is keep the software current.

Not a big deal to me, though, I always send 16bit Prophoto to external programs and I don't go to 8bit sRgb until I export as a jpeg.

Well, all I can say is that things do get pretty weird at times. I cannot think of anything that I may have done apart from the update that could have fixed the problem.

Just tested it again and all works fine. I am obviously still learning the ins and outs of Lightroom and Photoshop so it is very interesting to me to find the different workflows that people use with their images.

Thanks again and hope I didn't cause you too much angst.

Not a problem. It's nice sometimes to have both platforms to try things on. I know LR treats PS differently than other editors since it can send raw files plus xmp info directly to PS/ACR where it has to convert to tiff for other editors. I wonder if that has something to do with it.
