[scott] Dec 21, 2010 11:29 AM (in response to mhossey)Ungroup maybe?
But even in a group, if using the Direct Selection Tool, the boxes should be individually fillable.

Larry G. Schneider Dec 21, 2010 11:36 AM (in response to mhossey)Can you post a picture of the objects selected with tthe Appearance panel open to show what's going on? To me it looks like a gradient was used across the boxes, maybe at a layer level.

It does; I am still with 10.
When you create the boxes without the font, what about the slanting cutoffs?
I wondered whether you created a Compound Shape rather than a Compound Path.
A different way of creating the slanting cutooffs, maybe a bit more laborious but without any issues, would be to release the compound path of the A, remove the fills from the paths of the letters and the connecting part, and apply Object>Path>Divide Objects below. That should cut the affected boxes, and you may remove all the unwanted boxes/parts.
