Help. I seem to have lost the ability to save my files to the remote server.
You don't say which version of Dreamweaver you're using, but the ability to edit files directly on the remote server was removed from Dreamweaver CS5. You need to download the file to your local machine, and then upload it.
If I remember correctly, the option to edit on the remote server was available in earlier versions of Dreamweaver only if you defined the site as FTP and RDF.

rlinsurf1 Dec 23, 2010 11:09 AM (in response to David_Powers)Thanks, David.
Can you explain to me why it was removed? Shouldn't that choice be left to the user?
Best,
J.

3. Re: No Save to remote server... option
David_Powers Dec 23, 2010 12:48 PM (in response to rlinsurf1)Only Adobe could tell you why it was removed. I'm only guessing, but I know that a lot of people found the option confusing. There were a lot of questions in the forum from people who selected the FTP and RDF option without realizing what it was for. Changing pages directly on the server is potentially hazardous. So, I suspect it was removed to prevent changes from being made accidentally.
If you think it's an important feature, you can submit a feature request through the form at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform.
Since the feature has been removed, simply asking for it to be restored is unlikely to have any impact. However, if you explain to Adobe how it affects your workflow and why it's important to you, they might take notice.

Well, here's one of those issues with workflow. DW keeps replacing all my dependent files with ones on my local drive, and I keep having to rewrite the changes I made to them beforehand. I guess I checked that box, and now I can't find how to change that setting. Can you tell me where I can find that?
Thanks.

6. Re: No Save to remote server... option
rlinsurf1 Dec 23, 2010 1:16 PM (in response to rlinsurf1)Well, I'm completely confused. I was actually doing this for my sister, and she only has CS4, and it does have that menu option, but nothing seems to be being saved to the server.
It looks like no matter what I do, it's saving it to some location I don't recognize. Is there not a way to specify where the file should go in that dialog? I'm opening the page from the remote server, shouldn't it save back to the same location?
