Noel Carboni Dec 24, 2010 6:08 AM (in response to GM55A)Nope. Not when [ ] Open Documents as Tabs is UNchecked. Windows open where Photoshop thinks is best.
You can, of course, use "Tabbed" view, which opens every image "fit" into the Photoshop main window and centered. When using "Tabbed" view, there is an "Arrange Documents" button at the top of the screen that allows you to arrange multiple documents for viewing...
People making the transition from older Photoshop versions often deconfigure the default [ ] Open Documents as Tabs setting, feeling that they like "Windowed" view better (I was one of them), but I encourage you to try "Tabbed" view. It's actually got some advantages, and it really can grow on you.

GM55A Dec 24, 2010 6:18 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)I'm familiar with all the tabbed views, however, it doesn't help for floating window views and having an image open in a precise spot each time. It gets in the way of customizing palette locations that match specific workflows. Opening and closing palettes on varying screen resolutions and image window sizes cause the palettes to overlay the image on tab centered windows.
Thanx for your reply,

Noel Carboni Dec 24, 2010 6:30 AM (in response to GM55A)Consider dragging the palettes out of Photoshop and making them floating, and making the Photoshop main window smaller than the full extent of the screen. That should help keep the panels from overlaying the images. This is along the lines of what people with multiple monitors often do.

GM55A Dec 24, 2010 6:39 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)That would only work with small windows/images and in landscape mode. A lot of clickin and draggin inherent to CS4/5 which as you get older adds up to RSS. Simply having an image open in the same zoom and the same location like Internet Explorer or countless other progs have done for years.
Thanx for the thought,

GM55A Dec 26, 2010 2:27 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)Noel,
The issue isn't two monitors as every system I have, both Mac and PC's have dual monitors. My main editing/test system has a 30 inch NEC Adobe RGB monitor with a slightly smaller one as a secondary. As I do a lot of alpha/beta testing, my tool palette locations, image size and placement, etc. vary greatly. In a daily workflow scenario, you're better off with one larger monitor than two smaller ones with image/palette separation as the extensive mouse movement between the two is extremely fatigue prone.
Thanx,

Noel Carboni Dec 26, 2010 7:14 AM (in response to GM55A)I wonder whether you have optimal mouse settings then. I don't find things particularly fatiguing and as you can see I have my panels and work area well-separated.
Frankly, I regard a dual monitor setup as ideal for Photoshop, so we'll have to agree to disagree about what the "best" setup is.
I have been considering moving up to a 30 inch monitor for a long time, but frankly these 20 inchers perform flawlessly and I simply can't find fault in them.
