1. Re: Serious performance issues with PE9
Steve Grisetti Dec 29, 2010 6:42 AM (in response to NotEnoughHours)I think we've addressed this before, Dad, but what type of camcorder is your video coming from and which settings are you using for your Premiere Elements project?
The single biggest reasons you'll see performance issues if (a) your project settings don't match your source footage, and (b) you're not rendering your timeline whenever you see red lines above your clips.
The indicator that you've selected the right settings for your project is that, when you place your clips on your timeline, there will not be a red line above them.
If your issue is with zooms in and out of your timeline, you can improve performance by clicking the on track's header to dislay that clips as single thumbnails rather than a series of thumbnails. I also recommend going to Edit/Preferences and setting Timeline Scroll from Continuous to Page.
If after that you're STILL having problems, it could have to do with your system's configuration -- or maybe you just need to clean the data sludge out.

2. Re: Serious performance issues with PE9
NotEnoughHours Dec 29, 2010 6:54 AM (in response to Steve Grisetti)Thanks for the reply Steve, but I'm as sure as I can be this isn't due to any of those reasons. If it were, why would PE8 perform perfectly? I've used PE since version 4 and never had issues like this. I'm nothing like an expert but I do have a fair amount of experience using this program now. My footage comes from a Sony HDR-AX2000, and I have the project settings matched at HD 1080i. Don't have thumbnails displayed, timeline is set to page. Rendering helps, but this happens even with still photos - in fact, I have a test project here with 5 still photos, no effects or transitions, just enough to extend the timeline out, and the images are collectively less than 10MB - and I STILL have dragging. Blaming it on system configuration is OK, but what am I looking at that could be changed? And why why why would PE8 and every other program under the sun run fine, but not PE9? I had better performance on my 2GHz machine with 2GB RAM and a 500MB graphics card. This is 3.3GHz with 24GB RAM and a 1GB graphics card. Very very frustrated. This kind of performance is starting to cost me thousands in lost hours and making for an extremely frustrating experience :-(

Bill Hunt Dec 29, 2010 7:34 AM (in response to NotEnoughHours)Others have indicated that they felt PrE 9 was slower, especially regarding the Timeline, and especially the thumbnail displays, than previous versions. I have not seen any benchmarks, but the users reporting this sluggishness are trusted sources, and even if all they have are their impressions, I'd trust their observations, even in lieu of any hard, fast benchmark numbers. Sometimes, impressions are everything.

nealeh Dec 29, 2010 9:44 AM (in response to NotEnoughHours)The PRE9 timeline thumbnail drawing is cr*p compared to PRE7. But be aware that you can still move the CTI and access other features while the timeline is redrawing. I guess I'll eventually get used to it.
Cheers,
