Can no longer open a project - and crash report readers out there??

    jesskaat Community Member

      Hello there,

I've been working on a project for a couple of months and just completed phase one yesterday, sent it to Encore and produced a bunch of DVDs. Now, I can no longer open the project. It crashes every time, as do the auto save copies and back up copies. I'd have to go back to a very old copy, which works - they work if I go back far enough - and do a lot of restructuring.

Is there someone who can read a crash report for you to try and determine the problem?

      Thanks for your help.

      Regards,

      Jessica Vecchione

      ps. Happy New Year!

Does Adobe offer any kind of service to examine a crash report?

              HI,

I dont know about adobe support and crash reports...but the statement that "we're just users here" ( which is true, though there are some adobe employees who are also here ) doesnt mean you cant ask for help here and maybe get some help.

right off the bat I would check to see if maybe your hard drive got filled up to such a point with your export to dvd's....and the subsequent dvd creations ...maybe changed stuff on your computer that affects the project.  You would need to provide more info...like what version stuff you're using, your computer system specs and so on... dont know if you have the time to do all that...its a bit of work to supply all the info needed to make a best guess about what might fix your problem - but there's lots of good people here to help, including the fellow who told you we are users here...

If you want a guaranteed response from Adobe for technical help, you can contact Technical Support:

                http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/

On this forum, you will quite often get help from other users (non-Adobe folks), and you'll sometimes get help from Adobe personnel who are helping out in their free time. No guarantees. And most of us are still on our holiday break right now.

Go ahead and post your crash report here, and I'll have a look.

But we also need a lot more information than you've given so far. Any time that you ask a question here, please provide details of the exact version number of Premire Pro, operating system, third-party software used, and footage types... and anything else that you think might be relevant.

Thanks so much for all your help. This software and hardware is so complex and sophisticated  it's hard to understand every facet of it.

                  My system is:

                  PC, Windows 7 Professional

                  Intel i7 processor, 3.07 ghz

                  12 gigs ram

3 - 2 tera hard drives, all raid 0. (I use them to segment clients, none are full. The one in question is 1/3 full)

I just installed the Nvidia Quadro 4000 graphics card thinking I would upgrade to CS5, but there have been so many kinks that I'm in no hurry to do that.

I'm current on all Windows, Adobe, Nvidia updates and have Direct X 11

I'm using Premiere CS4, After Effects CS4 etc.

                  Plugins:

                  Prodad - Vitascene, Mercali, Heroglyph

New Blue Video filters and Transitions

                  Pixelan

and just recently Red Giant Looks

I've been using Prodad for 3 years and since I got the new card, Vitascene won't work. It tells me my graphics card isn't powerful enough and that I don't have direct X. Prodad is insisting that it's my problem. The other Prodad plugins work fine.

I had used a lot of the Prodad filters on this particular project, and in the middle of it, I switched cards and although I cannot now use Vitascene, the filters I had added to this project previously work! As long as I make no changes to the clips, (ie, change a tranistion etc.) the filter will continue to work. I figured I'd coast through this way, and am not using Vitascene on any new projects. (I have a ton of old projects that are loaded with Vitascene effects. I hope I'll never have to go back to them.)

So, I can't help feeling like Vitascene is part of the problem.

Today, I uninstalled Vitascene, and Looks (which I bought and installed yesterday - right about when I could no longer open this project). Nothing worked.

I had backed up yesterday afternoon, and the project will not open on another computer from the BU disc.

If I go back to a version from about a month ago, I can open it and I'll be able to recreate things from there, but I'm terrified of this happening again.

So, I have all this great technology, and for the most part, I get things to work fine, but I don't have a real depth of understanding of how these things work and interact. And, I wish I could gain more knowledge, but I'm not even sure where to start. Any clues you all can give me are greatly appreciated.

                  Best Regards,

                  Jessica

                    Jessica,

While you are waiting for the crash report to be decoded, here are some thoughts:

Start a New Project w/ the same specs., and attempt to Import that original Project into it. Does this work?

Do you have any ADL's (Adobe Dynamic Links) to Encore, AE, etc.?

Have your Assets changed, from when they were Imported into that Project? In a few instances, a bad Asset has brought a re-Opened Project to its knees.

This PrPro-Wiki FAQ might also offer some tips.

Do other Projects Open fine? I assume so, as you mention "going back far enough."

                    Good luck,

                      One more thing:

                      The footage involved is:

                      M2T - 1440x1080 (shot from Canon XH-A1)

                      AVI (After Effects sequences)

                      JPEGS, Gifs etc.

                      WAV, MP3

I had sent the project to Encore and burned DVDs. They're just fine. But, I can't open the Encore project either. It just hangs as it tries to load the encoded timeline.

                      Jess

                        A couple more questions, please:

How large are those JPEG's and GIF's?

Are the AE Comps Exported from AE, and then Imported into PrPro, or are they linked via ADL?

I see MP3's, and those can cause trouble. I always convert all MP3's to PCM/WAV 48KHz 16-bit, and Import those WAV's. I do not recall MP3's crashing a Project, but they can be problematic. Since those are in the Project, one workaround might be to Move those MP3's, to where PrPro cannot find them. Does the Project now Open? If so, you will get a "Where is file ____.MP3?" I think that I would allow those to be Off-lined, and then do the MP3 to PCM/WAV conversion, Import those, and then go about replacing each MP3 on the Timeline, with the resultant WAV files. Note: the MP3's might play no role in this, but with the above steps, you can rule them out. If Moving them (hiding them actually), does nothing, then I'd forget the MP3's, as they had been working for you. Just keep that conversion to PCM/WAV in the back of your mind for next Project.

                        Good luck,

Was this with ADL, or did you Export/Import between En and PrPro?

Odd that the Encore Project will no longer Open. That makes me think Assets, but could be wrong.

                            > thinking I would upgrade to CS5, but there have been so many kinks that I'm in no hurry to do that.

No offense, but I think that that's a backward way of thinking. Clearly, I'm biased, so I'll leave others to confirm or contradict this, but I think that it's pretty clear the Premiere Pro CS5 is vastly more stable, reliable, effective, and useful than Premiere Pro CS4. So, a poor experience with CS4 should not be used to come to the conclusion that you don't want to upgrade.

OK, enough of the salesperson talk. My next post will actually be about your technical issue. Stay tuned.

Wow, great idea to remove assets and see what happens. Well, so far I've removed

.wav, .mp3, and all the different image folders and it still crashes. I'm moving

the AE file and we'll see if that's a problem.

I don't have ADL. I import each file manually after it's rendered. I always

render to .avi. I'm not sure that's the best thing.......

                                Good work.

You have eliminated the Audio files. You have eliminated ADL (by not having used it). Hope that it is simply an Asset, and that you can track it down. Now remember, the Assets are just easy targets, and might not be at fault, but if you can eliminate them, then it might be easier to see what IS the problem.

Good luck, and hope that Todd can find something useful in the report.

Here is my reading of your description of your problem and the sequence of events:

You changed to a different graphics card, and things immediately stopped working after that, with your ProDad software telling you of a conflict. Your crash report indicates that you have ProDad software in use with this project.

My recommendation is to go back to the version of the project that you can open, and rebuild your project from that point without using ProDad software. If that works, but you feel that you need ProDad software to do your work, then at least you would have demonstrated that it was the ProDad software (or a conflict with it) that was causing the problem, and you can ask ProDad for help getting past that.

                                    yikes, what a mess

maybe go back to old graphics card for now till done with this project...THEN change it ?

but anyway, I have a question --  when are you going to revisit woofstock ?

                                      Uggh,

I feel like I've been to hell and back with this. I uninstalled all the prodad stuff, plus the New Blue FX and - voila - I got it to load. So, I thought I'd put the New Blue FX back, and then it wouldn't load again. I uninstalled new blue and it still wouldn't load. I'm giving up. I'm going to recreate it from one of the old projects that still load. What a drag. I'm so tired of installing and uninstalling programs. And, I've got work to do today....

Hey robodog are you from Upstate NY? Do you know our Humane Society? I do a video every year gratis. I love that place.

                                      Here's last year, Mutti Gras:

                                      http://vimeo.com/8299299

And this year's, which I just finished, Barktoberfest:

                                      http://vimeo.com/18268165

Maybe my real problems are from 4 cats hanging around the editing table and the warm computers all day. Probably clogged with fur....

Thanks to all for trying to help. I have to give up at this point.........

Best regards and luck in 2011 to all.

so that didnt happen...but they dont have tons of money for many of these things...its either book promo or charity promo etc...you know? not tons of money in that.

I was about to pan the entire video, and then I saw the Bulldog! He looked like my Beauregard, so naturally I rethought, and loved the video. Could have used a few more shots of the Bulldog, but that's just me.

Good luck, and hope that you can work on the Projects sans New Blue FX and ProDAD. Odd that the New Blue FX's removal worked for a bit, but then not the second time.

Hey thanks Bill and Rod for watching the doggie videos. That's such a fun event. I've got a big shepherd mix also who makes a couple of appearences. His hair clogs things up too.

Rod, I'll definitely send a link to your friend. I'd love to work on such projects.

So, I got lucky in that I had produced the DVDs for that crashed project yesterday and the problems started after that. But, just a couple of hours ago, (this is a  general services hospital video) I got a call from the marketing dept. They wanted an FLV by the morning for a web presentation to their affiliates on Wed. I thought I was looking at an all nighter to recreate from an older copy, but I took the .VOB file and produced the FLV from that. It's 320x240 anyway. Shouldn't make a difference.

Thanks to you guys and everyone for the input. Bill, removing assets is a very good idea and I'll remember that for next time. Hopefully, next time it will actually be the fault of an asset. I did consider putting the old ATI Radeon card back, but I found a really nice package that rivals the Prodad filters. It's Magic Bullet Looks by Red Giant. I'm going to forge ahead without Prodad and hope that no one wants me to go back into old projects........

                                              Maybe CS5 next month........

                                              Cheers.

Which one of the ProDAD products did you have, Vitascene? I've used that, plus their Heroglyph, but only on nVidia cards, and have not had an issue - yet.

Good luck, and remember - always use more Bulldogs! Can never have too many Bulldogs...

I was using Vitascene and Heroglyph and Mercali which is a stabilizer. They are all quite good, just lousy interfaces. Mercali and Heroglyph (titling program) still work. Go figure. It's gotta be their problem, but they don't want to be bothered.

HA ! I never met a photographer who didnt over or under expose stuff, and do all kinds of stuff that is sometimes horrid.

I know that " J "  once worked on something with somebody ...think it was some now famous photo guy ...who loaded his leica with film ...but the film didnt advance when loaded ( rangefinder back then )...and to make a long story short, the entire shoot for that roll was non existent...the film never got exposed !!!!  from then on " J "  loads his own cameras.  It scared him and probably cost him a ton of money to reshoot all that stuff.. live and learn. anyway, point is everyone deals with stuff all the time ( printing up or down to make up for exposures, etc etc. )

I didnt mean to imply the shot of rex wasnt good...just played with selective color to spruce it up a bit for fun.

Yeah, that stuff happened with film. Most cameras allowed one to "see" the film advance, if they took out the slack, as the rewind crank would turn too. I knew better, but did a shoot in Williamsburg, VA, and one body was not advancing. I did not check - hurry, or too little coffee early in the AM? Luckily, I was shooting with 3 Nikons, so had the film from two of three for the beginning (missed some of the WA establishing shots), and when it was time to reload those, I checked body #1 - Oops!!!! Corrected that, and got the images (went back on my own for a few of the WA shots), and learned a lesson, that I thought I knew - check the rewind crank regardless.

he loaded his own Nikon and handed it to me...I put on tripod and set up stuff, shot, etc.  BUT I also brought along my little junky digital camera for the heck of it, and duplicated some of the shots with the digital camera.....

well.....what a horror story....his camera never advanced the film, I never checked the rewind slack ( trusting him to load his own stupid camera ). And in the end he kept saying that it was MY FAULT for not "feeling" that the tension on the advance indicated it had not loaded properly.  And this is a very good friend !  But he kept coming back to " it was MY fault ! "

Anyway, the digital stuff I shot ( thank gawd ) as a sort of "backup" was enough to use on the website without having to go back up there and reshoot the stuff...

you have no idea...setting up that stupid shot was like a major thing..moving stuff around, lights, blacking out windows, a regular circus !  Whew...got the shot, but learned lesson. Even friends will rear their ugly heads sometimes.  LOL

well, I cheated a bit. The junky digital doesnt like anything other than 56k ( daylight ) and this was shot with tungsten ( 32k )..the film in the nikon was 32k...the film that didnt advance that is..

anyway, I made the digital shot black and white and then made it "tinted" ( a duotone ) in psd...  cause the original "color" was horrendous.

Right now I can only do SD and I'm not thrilled with 99% of what I've been doing --  mostly TESTS ---as I've just learned about editing this past year or so.
