    keyboard shortcut conflict

    BruinSID Community Member

I am new Mac user and have installed CS5 for the Mac. I am wondering how to resolve global Mac OSX keyboard shortcut conflicts with InDesign. For example, I use F12 for Swatches, but instead in ID it increases the laptop volume - which is the Mac shortcut. Is there anyway to resolve this and can I import my PC ID shortcuts to Mac ID? Thanks

The Bad News is that OS X Built-in shortcuts have priority over anything other software can throw at it -- and OS X uses lots, lots, lots of "global" shortcut keys.

More Bad News is that you mention it's a laptop; it has less keys than a regular keyboard, so you're going to have problems with, for example, number pad shortcut assignments. I have a proper Mac-and-keyboard so I can't advise you on that.

For the function keys: Look in your System Preferences. Under Keyboard, section Keyboard, there is a checkbox "Use F1, F2 etc. as standard function keys". This toggles you back to regular function keys. To access the OS X function under keys, I hold down the "Fn" key -- but you laptop may not have one ...

You might want to browse the Keyboard Shortcuts section as well; I've ruthlessly switched off any key combo that I find unnecessary.

As for copying your PC shortcut set: there ought to be a "yourSetName.IDKK" file somewhere on your PC, in the folder where your other preferences are stored. You can see what happens if you copy this into the equivalent location on your Mac and then select your set -- I doubt it's as easy as that, but it's certainly worth a try.

I doubt that copying PC shorcut keys to mac will work at all. First, copying earlier version sets to CS5 is not viable, and second, a PC set is going to use PC moifier keys, and I doubt that they translate to the Mac versions.
