When applying multilevel lists, other text disappears

Hello,

we are migrating from RoboHelp Word to RoboHelp HTML at work. I created a style sheet with multilevel list styles in RoboHelp HTML. Then I imported the HTML pages of the generated RoboHelp for Word version of our project. We have to reapply styles to the lists for all these imported pages.

But I have the following problem: When I click on a list, and indicate the mulitlevel style that should be applied to this list, I see other text disappearing a few lines below.

E.g.:

Before applying the list style (the list has an unrecognised list style of RoboHelp for Word):

"Follow these steps:

     1 first step

     2 second step

     3 third step

Then you have completed the action

and you should be able to logon"

And after applying the list style, soms text has been deleted a few lines further on:

"Follow these steps:

     1. first step

     2. second step

     3. third step

and you should be able to log on"

Did I do something wrong when importing the pages, creating the css, creating the multilevel list style, applying the multilevel list style,... ?

Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong?

Regards,

Lieselot.

No idea but if you send me a new project as per the instructions on my site, I will take a look.

You need to import the topic before it has gone wrong and make sure the same CSS is applied. State which list style it is you apply that causes the text to go missing.

Make sure you include a link to this thread when you send the project.

Hello Peter,

actually, nothing goes wrong when I import the topic. So I do import the topic before it goes wrong. The same css is already applied for all topics. The list style that I'm applying is a multilevel list style. The problem seems to show up with any multilevel list style in any of the topics. Sometimes the problem doesn't occur anymore when I just apply the style line by line, or when I add or delete a space or something.

I'm sorry, but I can't send you the project, since it's a project for work. I cannot reproduce the same situation again in another project either.

Regards,

Lieselot.

Yes I appreciate it did not go wrong on import. What I wanted was a topic in that state so that I could see it go wrong.

I wasn't after the whole project, just a topic that had the problem. However your reply would indicate this is a project specific problem.

Can you not create a copy of the project and trash all topics except one? If not, there isn't much I can do to help you.

Hi there Liesalot (interesting name)

Your post intrigues me as this morning I encountered something similar.

I'll offer up my own findings in the hopes it will help you determine what is happening with you.

In my own case, I was using an ordinary list and not a multi-level. But I could fathom the same thing occurring with a multi-level. I had generated my WebHelp and was looking it over and became puzzled as part of my topic seemed to have gone missing. I wondered if somehow I had managed to inadvertently select the text and delete it. So I quickly bounced back over to RoboHelp HTML. Sure enough, the text was clearly visible in the topic. So what gives?

So I decide to use one of my favorite features of RoboHelp HTML. Select some of the "missing" text and change the view to see the underlying HTML. I like this because the selected text is what is selected when you switch. Upon examining the HTML, I noted that somehow (and I'm unsure why) there was a style: transparent code that crept in and rendered the text as invisible.

Obliterating this code fixed my problem.

Cheers... Rick

Hello,

I'm sorry Peter, I really can't send any part of the project, it's confidential and I might get fired sending it to you.

Rick, for me the text already disappears before generating the project. I can see it being deleted when I apply the multilevel style. The strange thing is that it always seems to be deleting the text that is situated about 4 lines under the text that I'm formatting. When I leave a big space 4 lines under the multilevel list, then that space is reduced. Strange.

Anyway, I will check what the underlying html codes are, but I'm not that familiar with HTML. Maybe some old code got involved because it used to be a RH Word project.

Thanks anyway!

Regards,

LiesElot 😉

Surely your manager would allow you to send it scaled back to one topic? You could change the text to something else.

As it is, the help is so confidential that even the text you want does a runner and cannot be read by anyone!

Sorry I cannot help more.

You might want to take a look at the underlying HTML code, as suggested. It's possible that <BR> tags (Shift+Enter) were used instead of </P> tags (Enter). If so, the list is not considered closed, and might be causing issues.

Good luck,

Leon

LATEST

As to Peter's offer to look at a topic, you could certainly make a copy of one of your top-secret topics, and replace all the super-secret content with the Latin blurb used in computer-land since the 1950's:

This would allow him (and the rest of us) to see the important stuff (the HTML code).

Good luck,

Leon
