rowby Jan 10, 2011 5:08 PM (in response to shooternz)Hi shooternz
Thanks. Where do I change that in the Export settings. When I select Quicktime I don't see an "Uncompressed" setting for video.
For example, in the Video tab, under Video Codec I can choose Animation, which I know I want (for the highest quality). But I don't see an "uncompressed".
In the Animation codec I see a Codec Settings button, but it is greyed out.
I don't have Quicktime Pro on this computer. Should I have that to do "uncompressed"????

I do have QT Pro installed.

6. Re: Quicktime Export 1920 x 1080
Colin Brougham Jan 10, 2011 5:25 PM (in response to rowby)Don't get QT Pro--you don't need it. It won't add anything to Premiere.
I suggested the Avid QuickTime Codecs as they are cross-platform and very high quality at significantly smaller file sizes then Uncompressed.
EDIT: You do realize that where it says "Animation," that is a drop-down menu with a number of choices, right?
EDIT #2: OK, you do realize that. The thing is, there is no "Uncompressed" in QuickTime. Instead, in QT parlance, you want the codec called "None." It's functionally the same as Uncompressed in an MS AVI. Do note that, depending on the length of your project, your file is apt to be huge.

shooternz Jan 10, 2011 5:29 PM (in response to Colin Brougham)Thanx for reminder Colin
I have just downloaded the Avid Codecs from your link
I am testing the Panny AF 102 tomorrow and then its post workflow in CS5 with various codecs straight after.
These additional codecs could be interesting.

I am just asking... but it seems to me a cumbersome way to get your CC done by exporting it.
What CC application is it going to?

He is also the cinematographer and he wants to do the color tweaking. And he has a Mac. I have a PC.

shooternz Jan 10, 2011 5:51 PM (in response to rowby)I hope he is aware that he will need to razor all the scenes so he can CC / grade them as individual clips (ie they are a single stream of video in your export.)

I downloaded and installed the Avid codecs. Thanks!
Which one(s) of the Avids do you recommend for Quicktime (animation). For high def. With the understanding that he will be doing color correcting.

14. Re: Quicktime Export 1920 x 1080
Colin Brougham Jan 10, 2011 6:31 PM (in response to rowby)Use Avid DNxHD. Click Codec Settings, and leave Color Levels at 709, and from the Resolutions drop down, select 1080i/59.94 DNxHD 220 10-bit; hit OK. In the Video tab, set your frame size to 1920x1080, frame rate to 29.97, field type to Progressive, and aspect to Square Pixels. You can set Maximum Depth and MRQ if you like. That should do it, but do a short test before exporting everything
As a file size comparison, I exported the same 10-seconds of video to the above codec/settings, and with the codec set to None. The DNxHD MOV was 271MB; the uncompressed MOV was 1830MB. I couldn't tell the difference between the two.

16. Re: Quicktime Export 1920 x 1080
Colin Brougham Jan 10, 2011 6:59 PM (in response to shooternz)Yes, indeed--but the nice is thing is that they're free, they're cross-platform, and they're both encode and decode capable on both platforms. ProRes 422 is pretty equivalent to DNxHD, but the problem is that it's not free (you need FCP), and while you can playback on both Mac and PC without anything more than a standard QT Player installation, you can't encode to ProRes on a PC... ever.
The Avid codecs are such a versatile tool, that the bother of a download and install seems to be a minor, minor inconvenience. I usually make it easy on the person I'm sending DNxHD files to, and include the installer on the disk/drive.

Gerry@ Mar 18, 2011 5:32 AM (in response to Colin Brougham)Good day to you all.
I'm having real problems exporting to Quicktime but I'm in the UK and obviously the format is PAL rather than NTSC, but I'm not sure if that affects the QuickTime settings.
I'm using PPro CS5 and I have downloaded the AVID codecs, mentioned above, and I can see them in the Video Codec menu.
My source file is:
Format: .avi
Frame rate: 25
Duration: 5m 30s
Size: 720 x 576 (1.4587)
Audio: 48000Hz - 16 bit - stereo
I want to output this to play on iPads, Macs, etc. in the UK. Which setting should I be using as I have gone around in ever decreasing circles and keep getting the "Error compiling movie", "Unable to create or open output file" dialogue.
Many thanks in advance.

Jeff Bellune Mar 18, 2011 5:54 AM (in response to Gerry@)This sounds like a permissions issue. You should repair them. If that fails, then log on as the root user, launch Pr, then log off and back in to your account and try again.

Forgive me, permissions, eh, where do I find them?
I am the only user on the PC and software, if that helps?
Best wishes,

Gerry@ Mar 18, 2011 6:16 AM (in response to Jeff Bellune)-Jeff,
Neither am I.
I'm looking at my preferences and I cannot find anything there that gives any idea.
The video files are on an internat drive (J:) and not on a network.
Best wishes,

26. Re: Quicktime Export 1920 x 1080
Jeff Bellune Mar 18, 2011 6:29 AM (in response to Gerry@)OK, I thought you were using a Mac.
internat drive (J:)
Internet drive? As in cloud computing? Or did you mean internal drive?
If the former, then Pr may have issues similar to networked drives. I can't say for sure because I don't use the cloud nor have I done any testing on or with the cloud.
Regardless, are you logged on to your account as an administrator? Even if you are, try right-clicking the Pr shortcut or application file and selecting Run as Administrator. That should help you overcome any underlying permission problems.

Many thanks, I can't spell - internal (Dohhhhh)
I have just tried to save the file to my D drive and it worked.
You were right, permissions......
Now I have to see why my J drive is 'off limits'
Many thanks again,
