Nini Tjäder Jan 18, 2011 1:14 AM (in response to phyllisj9)What do you mean with "wireframing"?
(English is not my first language so to me that could mean anything).

Harbs. Jan 18, 2011 3:33 AM (in response to Nini Tjäder)A website wireframe is a basic sketch of what a website will look like (before doing any of the html/css, etc.)

Nini Tjäder Jan 18, 2011 6:57 AM (in response to phyllisj9)Fireworks is much more suited for it than InDesign.
You can do it in InDesign as long as you don't expect to be able to seemlessly use what you do in the actual website afterwards. You would stil have to build the site in for isntance DreamWeaver.

5. Re: InDesign for wireframing websites?
phyllisj9 Jan 18, 2011 7:27 AM (in response to Nini Tjäder)Yeah I love Fireworks. I wish it could make a decent PDF though. This is actually for a class I'm taking in Web Design, so I need the wireframe to look as good as possible (and I have to turn it in as a PDF). I will be building the site afterward, and I'd definitely do the visuals in Fireworks (though I'd build the final HTML pages in Dreamweaver). It's okay if my wireframes are static, though adding some interactivity would have been cool.
If I were sharing wireframes with a client, I'm not sure I'd want to give them the crummy PDFs that Fireworks generates. That's a big downer for the program as far as I'm concerned.
I've heard Microsoft Visio is really good for wireframing, but I can't afford to buy it.
What to do what to do......

Search Google for terms like "website wireframe freeware" without quotes?

rob day Jan 18, 2011 9:04 AM (in response to phyllisj9)If you are using OSX you might find this script useful:
http://www.zenodesign.com/forum/PagestoPSLayers.zip
It converts a layered ID page into a layered Photoshop file. There's a readme included. It works in CS5 as long as you are running the most recent patches.

9. Re: InDesign for wireframing websites?
phyllisj9 Jan 18, 2011 10:18 AM (in response to Nini Tjäder)Hey! Fuzzy type, fuzzy imagery. PDFs from Fireworks look the way a website would print, whereas I need them to look the way a web site would appear on screen (clean lines, etc.). Fireworks uses vector data but apparently doesn't export that into the PDF format.
And thanks for the suggestions everybody! I'm using Windows so am unable to check out the OSX script.
Thanks, Phyllis

10. Re: InDesign for wireframing websites?
phyllisj9 Jan 18, 2011 10:19 AM (in response to phyllisj9)I've had another suggestion that the FXG format would help. I'm using Fireworks CS4, whereas CS5 allows an FXG export. I've never used that format, but I hear it works well with Illustrator. I might be able to get an upgrade or at least a trial of CS5. That might end up making Fireworks usable after all.
Dunno!
Thanks, Phyllis

11. Re: InDesign for wireframing websites?
jazz_tastic Feb 2, 2011 10:24 AM (in response to phyllisj9)Hey Phyllis!
So recently I've created a REALLY basic wireframe using InDesign. I basically created the visual direction so my client could easily understand how the Web site would flow. In other words, boxes with page names and lines connecting them. It can be really simple if all you're trying to do is show the site's direction.
From there, we will create the in-depth visual layout for the splash page, home page and a global page (This is where I utilize Photoshop/Fireworks/Illustrator or Flash). This is where we will dive into color schemes, and layout schematics. In our case, this a site where we have no logo established, but have the overall concept in place, so that's why we haven't decided on an overall theme just yet. Still working out the kinks!!
Hope this helps!

Well, English is my first language, and when I first came across the word 'wireframing' it could have meant anything to me too. I was completely baffled -- and I'll admit, I'm still a bit baffled!
Although widely used, the word 'wireframe' strikes me as very bad English. (The original poster is exonerated though -- this rubbish word is used all over the place.) It's a fine example of tradesmen's "specialist" slang, which keeps newcomers out and protects "insiders".
