1. Re: Correct settings for 16X9 SD Mini-DV Source
Bill Hunt Jan 19, 2011 7:29 PM (in response to BJBBJB1)For your Project/Sequence setting, choose the DV NTSC 720x 480 Widescreen 16:9 (or PAL, if you are in PAL-land), with a DD 5.1 SS Master.
Unless PrPro misses the flags, you should get Capture to match. If you do not, then use Interpret Footage to correct that PAR issue.
Good luck,
Hunt
PS - you are correct that you will want to Export the Video and then the Audio separately for the DD 5.1 SS with the SurCode plug-in.

2. Re: Correct settings for 16X9 SD Mini-DV Source
BJBBJB1 Jan 19, 2011 8:13 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Bill,
Thanks.
So for media encoder I assume I would use NTSC DV widescreen high quality?
And then Encore I would just pick DVD....there are no additional settings like for Blu-Ray, correct? And I don't see any distinction there about 4:3 vs. widescreen. So I was just wondering how it knew unless it was from the incoming footage.
And when finally burning a DVD from Encore, there would be no additional transcoding with the above settings?
It would just burn the correct widescreen DVD because it would know about the incoming footage ratio?
I guess all of the above questions should be in another forum but I did not want to cross-post.....
All of the above seems to center on where in the workflow do you have to tell anything after Pr Pro you are working with DV widescreen vs. DV 4:3. If it is only upon capture and in Pr Pro, that is pretty easy...

3. Re: Correct settings for 16X9 SD Mini-DV Source
Bill Hunt Jan 20, 2011 9:40 AM (in response to BJBBJB1)A lot will depend on how you are getting your PrPro material into Encore.
If you are Exporting from PrPro as a 100% DVD-compliant MPEG-2, then Encore should show it as Do Not Transcode.
If you are Exporting as DV-AVI, then Encore will have to Transcode it to MPEG-2. In that case, there will be a Transcode to DV-AVI (uncheck Resample), but that will be minimal. Then Encore will Transcode to MPEG-2, either automatically, or one can click on the Transcode settings in the Project Panel to specify the exact Transcoding applied. If one is using ADL (Adobe Dynamic Link), there will be no Export, so no Transcoding from PrPro, but then for output to DVD, there WILL be Transcoding needed, just as above - automatic, or manually set.
As for the Widescreen vs Standard, there will be flags to tell En what you have, whether it from an Exported/Imported file, or from ADL. With material from PrPro, there should be no issue with En seeing and honoring those flags. With some other material, it will depend on many factors.
Hope that helps,
Hunt

4. Re: Correct settings for 16X9 SD Mini-DV Source
BJBBJB1 Jan 20, 2011 4:51 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Bill,
I will be exporting separately out of PPro as I am doing DD5.1. So the best choice seems to be 100% DVD-compliant MPEG for media encoder. Then straight DVD as my Encore project choice.
Thanks a lot!

5. Re: Correct settings for 16X9 SD Mini-DV Source
Bill Hunt Jan 20, 2011 5:52 PM (in response to BJBBJB1)So long as the Export is fully DVD-compliant, there should not be any problem with this method.
One thing to check will be that when you join up your MPEG-2 Video file, and your AC3 Audio file, is that the Duration of the Video is exactly the Duration of the Audio, or ever so slightly longer. There are different block sizes used between the Audio and the Video, and you do not want the Audio to be longer than the Video, even by a few Audio Units. As I always start each Sequence (and hence En Timeline) with about 02 sec. of Black Video, and also end with about 02 sec. of Black Video, and always end any Audio, no farther than the last 01 sec. of Video, I do not have that problem.
Another plus to doing the Black Video to start each Sequence is that it gives the players (especially high-end players) time to lock into both the Video and the DD 5.1 SS Audio. Having it at both ends, also give me a "cover" for any laser movement necessary, as that will happen during otherwise black on-screen. If one does not do that, and there is a pause when the laser needs to move, the viewer can get a black "flash." The Dip-to-Black and small section of Black Video will hide that, should it occur.
Good luck,
Hunt

Bill Hunt Jan 21, 2011 3:44 PM (in response to BJBBJB1)I hope that everything works as smoothly for you, as it does for me.
Good luck,
Hunt
PS - I am certain that you know this, but will repeat it for others - Encore cannot monitor DD 5.1 SS Audio. That needs to be done in PrPro (or Audition, etc.), but it will pass that DD AC3 5.1 SS to the DVD/BD. Do not want anyone wondering why En mixed-down to stereo. If done correctly, that is ONLY in the Audio monitoring, and not on the burned disc.
