Files Missing: what have I done?

    Opus 111 Community Member

Probably done something stupid here. I downloaded and installed upgrade from Photoshop CS4 to CS5. Once I had CS5 up and running I uninstalled CS4. I am now getting a message on launch telling me that "One or more files in the Adobe Application Support folder, necessary for running Photoshop, are missing.  Please run the Photoshop installer and re-install Photoshop." (despite the message CS5 actually runs ok, though it seems to run more slowly than before I uninstalled CS4). How do I address this: do I need to install CS5 again, or is it missing something from CS4 that I will need to reinstall? I was given to believe that the upgrade is really the full programme and doesn't actually 'upgrade' the older version; is this correct and if so why does uninstalling CS4 make it think some files are missing? Will I need to download CS5 again to deal with this?

Also I have noticed that CS5 is in some operations slower than CS4 despite having access to much more ram now it is 64bit, it is also quite jerky when panning across zoomed in images with my wacom tablet.

I am a photographic artist and as such not really very techie. I know my way around Photoshop, but don't know much about the tech side of these things, so that is why I am asking what are probably very naive questions.

Yes, the upgrade is a FULL INSTALLER.

The problem being reported is that the CS5 installer often messes up the permissions in various support folders so the needed files can't be written.

Uninstalling and re-installing may help.  Use the Adobe uninstaller, don't just trash things.

The installer is written by a different team, and it has always been an embarrassment to Adobe engineers who have no input into it.

I got this or a very similar error a day after installing CS5. A re-install of just Photoshop and I haven't had the problem since. I also repaired permissions just to be on the safe side.

I too had the same error message as mentioned by OPUS 111, though I had uninstalled cs3, after having installed cs5, and then got the error message. Anyhow, I did an uninstall / reinstall of CS5 Photoshop and the error message went way. I did not repair permissions for this issue to be fixed.

                I have the same problem.

I AM quite tech savy, and I must say, having not used Adobe products before, there is MUCH to be improved on the ease of installation side.  Very confusing.  I bought CS4 with a free upgrade to CS5.  Upgrading still kept the CS4 files on my computer.  I used the Adobe uninstall application to remove CS4, but now I get this error when running Photoshop for CS5.

I can see why Apple doesn't like Adobe products, like Flash.

Yes, the installer team is evidently made up of a bunch of incompetent, obviously Macromedia-oriented fools.  The engineering teams for each of the point applications have no input into the installers and they probably would like to wring the necks of the individual members of the installer teams.  A Photoshop Principal Product manager has publicly referred to the installer as "a huge embarrassment to all of us."

However, installing an upgrade has NEVER overwritten the previous version, nor should it ever do so.  I have all versions of Photoshop from 7.0.1 through 11.0.2 installed on my machine and they coexist very nicely.  On the Mac we can even run more than one version simultaneously, just by launching the older version(s) first.

The problem is that the Uninstaller is also messed up, and when users run it, it removes components necessary to all versions, or more than one version.

Therefore, if you do not plan to keep previous versions installed on your machine, you should uninstall older versions BEFORE installing the new one.

Have you updated to Photoshop to 12.0.1? It should correct any permissions errors.

I have often reported problems to

Adobe and they have returned to me on almost all occasions to tell me that

I was mistaken about the problem stating it did not exist

sending the complaint back three times gets the same result but sending it back the fourth time usually gets the same response;"oh, yes we see it now !"

As far as the installer for the master collection and point products it has not work this way the response has been we see it the very first time and th4e same response the second, third fourth and tenth time the only difference here is that before they actually fixed it or fixed it by lkistening to some suggestion as to how it might be made different and where to look for the problem no suggestions are even looked at or considered.

Before thyey were able to determined no matter how wrong you were about fixing the progblem at least where to look for a solution. Fort instrance if you had told them the problem is in the way it writes permissions and tries to exclude a hacker they would ignore it. That might be wrong but at least it points to an area where the problem is manifesting itself.

I don't bother reporting or making suggestion as far as installation goes anymore.

I am at a job where I have to run Photoshop professionally away from home and away from my installation CDs... I just installed CS5, checked it to make sure it worked and then uninstalled CS4.  Now I am getting this same error message and when I output a JPEG file it looks bitmapped despite being 150 dpi and not enlarged in Keynote (it's final desitnation).  Is there any way around this without the CDs and re-installing?

Your best bet would be to grab the FREE trial download from Adobe.com to install and get the missing files back.

Adobe Unit Types.osax is missing from Library > ScriptingAdditions. Either retrieve it from a Previous Systems folder or snatch it from another machine running Photoshop CS 3, 4 or 5.
