Nonbreaking Spaces causing strange line breaks

    ascript_guy Community Member

I am seeing the use of nonbreaking spaces causing strange line breaks.

I don't understand why the line didn't break before the word "Library".  Why doesn't "Library" break with a hyphen?

Can't see the pic in an email, but do you have a language assigned?

It certainly LOOKS as if it should have broken befor library, and there's no indication of a non-joiner or other special character that would break without a hyphen. Is No Break also applied to any of this text?

              Just "English: USA"

No, "No Break" seems to be my only option to fix this.  But when "No Break" is assigned to text the interface doesn't make it obvious for another user (who is making corrections); I was trying to avoid that option.

Is this a bug that should be reported?

So far there's no real evidence that it IS a bug.

What version of ID ID are you using? OS? What font?

What happens if you change the width of the text frame or change the font? What about if you follow the directions here: Remove minor corruption by exporting

I frequently use a character style named "NoBreak" implementing that attribute only.  If I wanted to make it obvious to others working on a project I might change the definition to apply a text color or unique underline as well -- features I could remove when the project was close to completion by restoring "NoBreak" to just that attribute.  (I'd probably use a color -- most of my work is b&w, so a color would show up when I check for unwanted colors.)

Or for IDCS4 you could use Marc Autret's very handy ShowHideLocalFormatting script, as NoBreak is among the attributes it highlights.

In any case, I'm somewhat wary of using non-breaking spaces to move line-breaks, having received a bunch of MS Word mss. where they were liberally sprinkled, apparently unbeknownst to author or editor.  When I see one my first impulse is to turn them all into regular spaces.

                    David

                      Tested on multiple systems.

InDesign CS4 but the same thing happens in CS5

Mac OS 10.5.8 w/Intel chip and 10.5.8 w/Power PC chip

Font: Avenir LT Std (Opentype) using Suitcase Fusion 2 and FontAgent Pro

As I increase the width of the text frame, each letter of the word comes up (Libra, Librar, Library).  However, other things break incorrectly ("ISBN") when I do that.

If I changed the non-breaking space after "Library" to a normal space then all of "Library" drops down the next line.

I did try your suggestion re. trash InDesign Prefs and export as .inx, as well as .idml, with no joy.

Why isn't the hyphenation engine of InDesigned getting involved?

I'd like to look at this file, and I suspect a couple of the other regulars would, too. It's not certain we can figure out what's going on, but at this point I don't see a lot of use to speculating based on a screen shot.

If the file is not confidential you could package a few test pages and zip, then post on a server someplace and put a link here. If you prefer to keep it private, put the link in a private message (click my name to go to my profile to send a PM). If you don't have a server available any file sharing service will work -- I use YouSendIt.com, but a lot of the others are using DropBox. For yousendit, send it to yourself, then post the link.
