1. Re: How to associate chapter button with sound?
JSS1138 Jan 24, 2011 4:02 PM (in response to Igor Valentovitch)I question whether or not this is even possible for a DVD. I don't recall ever seeing a Hollywood disk with this capability.

Igor Valentovitch Jan 24, 2011 4:30 PM (in response to JSS1138)Well, I've watched a number of Hollywood DVD discs where the menu buttons not only make sounds upon clicking on them but also change shape etc.

John T Smith Jan 24, 2011 4:59 PM (in response to Igor Valentovitch)Hmm... I've read that there are DVD features that are available to programmers, using different (more expensive) software
As far as I know, Encore does not allow access to those programming features

Stan Jones Jan 24, 2011 5:02 PM (in response to John T Smith)It is called scripting, and you are correct, Encore does not do it. A do not know if scripting will create sounds.
A method used for some options is to use autoactivate on a button to go to a different menu that has a different button. You create multiple menus. I wonder if you could use a short transition movie that would make a sound.
Note that mouseover won't autoactivate, so such a technique does not work on a computer the way you'd like - even if this technique works for this purpose at all.

Bill Hunt Jan 24, 2011 8:54 PM (in response to Igor Valentovitch)Well, not directly, but one can assign a Button Transition to an Audio stream, that will only be a "sound." If the Menu has Audio, you should use the same format/CODEC as the Audio for the Menu.
Good luck,
Hunt

6. Re: How to associate chapter button with sound?
Igor Valentovitch Jan 26, 2011 8:08 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)Bill is right as always. But the method of assigning a sound to a menu button turns out to be more complicated. You cannot link a Button Transition to a sound in Encore - you can link the Transition only to a sequence (i.e. Premiere Pro sequence).
Here is my workflow to link a chapter button of given Encore menu to a short sound (in my case the sound was a 4sec. ocean wave which I edited in Soundbooth):
First, you need to create a new sequence in Premiere Pro which includes your desired sound (the wave in my case). Then go back to Encore -> import as an Asset this PrP sequence -> select the chapter button you want to associate the sound with -> go to 'Button Transition' submenu and link it to the imported sequence. Now when you play the preview in Encore you will see that every time you press that chapter button first the associated with the button transition starts playing (the wave sound in my case) and once the transition is finished the selected chapter starts playing. The problem is that while button transition is played the screen goes black - this is because your PrP sequence includes only sound and no image.
Hint: in order to make the "Button transition' more professional go back to the created PrP sound sequence and add to it the image of the chapter your chapter button is part of. For this purpose you need to select that chapter menu in Encore -> edit it in Photoshop = flatten the menu -> save the file under a different name -> add it to the PrP sound sequence so that the sound and the image are played simultaneously.
I know it sounds complicated but in fact is very logical and straightforward. Hope this helps

7. Re: How to associate chapter button with sound?
Bill Hunt Jan 27, 2011 11:37 AM (in response to Igor Valentovitch)The Button Transition can be linked to a muxed Asset file (not a Timeline). Now, the Video portion can be Black Video, When creating this Button Transition Asset, make sure that the Audio stream is exactly the same as any Audio in that Menu. For instance, if one has a DD AC3 Audio file for background music on the Menu, make sure that the Button Transition also has the muxed, DD AC3 Audio stream, with the same specs., as that Motion (Audio) Menu Asset.
Good luck,
Hunt
