How do I zoom on a page so I can read it?

There is no "magnifying glass" icon to zoom. I already have clicked on "Custom Fit," and closing the Navigation Pane enlarged it slightly. How can I simply make the text bigger?

Also, how can I open the Navigation Pane again?
