Flash video choppy in any browser

Viewing streaming video is extremely choppy in either Firefox or IE. It's like watching a slide show of still photos, not a moving picture. The audio portion is unaffected. I have un-installed, then re-installed Flash in both browsers. I've paused the video to allow the buffer to fill completely. Nothing changes. Viewing video from a local drive does not result in choppiness, so I feel this is a Flash issue. This has been going on for at least a year now. I've run the Microsoft test for defective RAM with no indications of a bad module, but I replaced them anyway. Flash video still sux. All my drivers, DirectX, etc. are current.

My system:

XP (SP3)

Fujitsu Lifebook N6010

P4 (3.2GB) + 2BG RAM

ATI Mobility 9700 w/ 128MB RAM

AVG Professional Firewall

For crying out loud. Why does this have to be so difficult, Adobe?

Hi, These issues are almost never just one thing causing it. Have you turned off the hardware acceleration to see if that makes a difference?

AMD/ATI form to check: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

System Info and Vendor Info: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/systemreqs/index.html

Finally, McAfee.....What is the name of the McAfee you are using and version number?

If you are using IE, in Tools>Internet Options, Do you have the Security for the Internet Zone set at Medium?

Flash Player is a browser plugin and works thru the browser, so anything installed in the browser is either a + or a -.

What website are you trying to stream?

Many things can effect videos/streaming/browsers/Flash Player/.

Test each browser here and let me know if you can see the Flash logo animation and what version of Flash Player is displayed.

Hi Blondie!

  • Hardware acceleration on or off makes no difference (I've been dealing

with this problem for over a year now)

*AMD/ATI link you sent is no good. The video driver is proprietary

(Fujitsu). They have had no updates available on their website since I

purchased the computer in 2005.

*System info: My system meets or exceeds all requirements.

*McAfee: I use AVG version 9.0.872 with the latest definition database. I

have tried deactivating this. It makes no difference.

  • When in IE, security settings are at medium.

  • Any Youtube video (or any other Flash based video for that matter) gives

me problems. You can try this one for example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=vcnH_kF1zXc&feature=player_embedded

  • Testing the Adobe page link you sent me results in an error message from

Adobe. Page not available (both browsers)

Thanks for your assistance.

-Chris

Hi, I thot about changing my screen name, but figured users would wonder where eidnolb went:-)

Propritary, huh? 5 years with no updated drivers sounds like they are behind in technology.

That video played fairly well, not choppy and just a very small amount of buffering. I'd give it a 9 out of 10 rating.

Video fps avg 20 dropped to 9 a couple of times, but then back up to 20 fps. Playing in 360p, speed at 3.13 Mbps. (I have a 9 year old Desktop XP/SP3 with IE6) Audio-100%

I have NO Anti-Virus browser addons either:-)

That Adobe test link is good, you didn't use the one from your email did you? If so, try the one from the thread.

Going to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash  Open Flash and post back all files there. The NPSWF files you will need to right click on and then Properties to obtain the version numbers.

Using IE, go to Tools, Manage Addons and look under "Show"(very light text) in All addons for Shockwave Flash Object. Is it there, enabled and what version?

Using FF, find the Shockwave Flash plugin and make sure it is Enabled.

Let's make sure Flash Player is Installed correctly before proceeding.

McAfee may be an issue, but we'll see

Thanks,

eidnolb

OK, the following files reside in the C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash

directory:

Flash10l.ocx

Flashutil10m_plugin

FlashInstall.txt

Genuinst.exe

Flashplayer.xpt

Install.txt

Flashutil10l_activex

KB923789

Flashutil10l_activex.dll

NPSWF = v 10.2.152.14

In IE, Shockwave Flash is enabled. V 10.1.102.64

In FF, Shockwave Plugin is enabled. V 10.2.152.14

I have contacted the Anti-Virus makers and we've run several in-depth scans.

I sent them the logs from these scans and there were no viruses. We also

tried de-activating the anti-virus components, but it had no effect on the

choppy video.

Hi, thanks for the file info. Ok on the scans, that is good to know.

The Flash files for FF (vs 10.2.152.14) is the beta version. Betas are not stable, so that I think is the problem with FF.

If you want to Uninstall that version and Install the latested 10.1.102.64, there may be a Special Uninstaller for the beta.

There usually is. You can check that here:

http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

The Flash files for IE are the current released version 10.1.102.64, so they are fine.

Would you clarify that this that you listed is "Shockwave Flash Object"

In IE, Shockwave Flash is enabled. V 10.1.102.64

Yes, it's the beta version. I installed it only a couple of days ago while

trying to track this problem down. This problem pre dates the beta

installation by more than a year though. The version I had installed

previously was the most current production version. I don't think the beta

version is the problem.

Confirming that in IE the Shockwave Flash Object is enabled. It is V

10.1.102.64.

Hi, thanks. I don't think the beta would help, but if you want to keep it, just don't expect it to perform as well.

This thread may be of help. Read it thru to Post # 7. http://forums.adobe.com/message/3345545#3345545

This from youtube may be helpful also. http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=74662

I just noticed this in your Post#2 McAfee: I use AVG version 9.0.872 with the latest definition database. I

Was this just a error or do you have McAfee & AVG? Also have you had McAfee or AVG for the time that you have had these problems?

Thanks,

eidnolb

I use AVG exclusively, but I did accidentally install McAfee (it was an

add-on with something else I installed the other day, can't remember what).

Anyway, I uninstalled it through add/remove programs.

Again, this problem goes back over a year, so McAfee isn't the problem.

Hi, thanks for clearing that up. However, McAfee doesn't Uninstall cleanly from just Add/Remove. You may have had these issues a year ago, but having McAfee files still on your system can certainly prevent solving the problem.

McAfee Removal Tool and Instructions

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507&lc=1033&pf=1

Follow Steps 1 & 2 only, Close all browsers before Running the Tool. Allow it to completely finish.
When you receive the CleanUp Successful, then be sure to Reboot(restart) your computer

Before you Run that Removal Tool, Disable AVG so it won't interfere or conflict with that Tool running.

AVG: Open AVG User Interface. (Right Click to Open)
Double-click on the Resident Shield.
Un-tick the option Resident Shield active.
SAVE the Changes

LinkScanner

Open AVG User Interface.(Right Click to Open)
Double-click on the LinkScanner.
Un-tick the option Enable AVG Search-Shield and Enable Active Surf-Shield.
SAVE the Changes

After you finish with the Removal Tool and Reboot, then Re-Enable AVG

You don't want these kind of McAfee files on your system.

Thanks,
