1. Re: Premiere is not translating Cross Dissolves to After Effects
telescopemediagroup Feb 7, 2011 1:26 PM (in response to telescopemediagroup)Hello -
I originally posted a discussion about Premiere pro CS5 not passing cross dissolves to AE as opacity data. Now, the rabbit hole is getting deeper - when Premiere passes clips to AE (by either using dynamic link or copy and pasting) each individual asset is being turned into a separate precomp. Cross dissolves are still not translated into opacity keyframes as expected.
I've attached a couple images to help explain my situation.
Mac OS 10.6.6
Premiere Pro CS5 5.0.3
After Effects 10.0.1.19

Todd_Kopriva Feb 7, 2011 6:52 PM (in response to telescopemediagroup)The cross dissolves failing to come across is a bug. I'm looking into (what I think is) a simple workaround right now. Stay tuned.

3. Re: Premiere is not translating Cross Dissolves to After Effects
Todd_Kopriva Feb 7, 2011 7:04 PM (in response to Todd_Kopriva)Yep. I've confirmed that this is a bug.
When After Effects is converting the Premiere Pro assets, it's looking for changes in the Opacity property to do the Cross Dissolve conversion. Premiere Pro changed the way that the Cross Dissolve was implemented, so there's no Opacity information being passed along unless there's a keyframe on the Opacity property. So, After Effects isn't getting any information about opacity changes.
The workaround is to add an Opacity keyframe to each clip that you're bringing over. If you add a keyframe at the current time by clicking the little diamond for the property in the Effect Controls window, it doesn't change the value at that time, so this doesn't actually change any opacity information. Then, when you bring the assets into After Effects, After Effects "sees" the opacity information, including the cross-dissolves.

telescopemediagroup Feb 7, 2011 7:36 PM (in response to Todd_Kopriva)Well, that's a fairly painless workaround for the mean time. Thanks, Todd! I'm looking forward to the next decimal release when this gets resolved permanently.
Any explanation on why everything is becoming a precomp all of the sudden? I have a 3-way color corrector applied to the second clip in the sequence, but the others are straight footage. If I remove the effect, they still carry over as a precomp. -

I'll look at this first thing tomorrow morning.

Todd_Kopriva Feb 8, 2011 10:49 AM (in response to Todd_Kopriva)Carl, would you mind sending us a Premiere Pro project that is demonstrating this behavior and the exact steps that you're using to reproduce the behavior? If you send it to aebugs (at) adobe (dot) com, I'll have a look. Bug reports that get sent there are the same as bug reports sent through the web form, but you can attach files to the email version.

bldg13 Aug 25, 2011 10:35 AM (in response to Todd_Kopriva)Hi Todd,
I'm wondering if you found out what was causing the clips to be pasted as pre-comps in AE. I am having a similar issue in CS5.5. I copy a series of clips from Premiere and paste into AE but rather than clips they come in as precomps.
Thanks in advance!

bldg13 Aug 28, 2011 4:26 PM (in response to bldg13)I found out my issues—all the clips in Premiere had "Scale to frame size" applied. If I de-select that option, the clips copy and paste over to AE as expected.

Cristóbal Vila Oct 19, 2011 3:59 AM (in response to Todd_Kopriva)Hi guys,
I am suffering this exact problem with cross dissolve not passing from Premiere to AE.
[ Big thanks to Todd for that workaround!!! ]
Actually I'm still working with Premiere 5.0.3 and AfterEffects 10.0.1.19
Is this bug solved for Premiere 5.0.4 and AfterEffects 10.0.2?
I'm in the middle of a big project, and it does not seduce me the idea to update things at this time. But if that bug has been fixed with these updates I surely will do.
Thanks for your feedback.

Todd_Kopriva Oct 19, 2011 8:25 AM (in response to Cristóbal Vila)No, this bug was not fixed in the CS5 updates. Just in the new CS5.5 versions.
