1. Re: LR and DNG support within LR
Ian Lyons Feb 12, 2011 6:46 AM (in response to Another Photographer)1. Lr has no way of telling whether the DNG has or hasn't got an embedded preview, and therefore has no way of indicating its size.
2. The embedded preview would be during import and up to the point that Lr renders its own previews. So, Lr will for the most part ignore the embedded preview.
3. No, Lr has no way of telling you whether the validation hash is present or not.
4. No, Lr has no specific indicator to tell you whether the raw file is embedded, although should should get a good indication by looking at the file size.
Edit - above apply to existing DNG files. Using the DNG Import preference in File Handling panel of Preferences you can customise 1, 2 and 4 when creating new DNG files during import

2. Re: LR and DNG support within LR
Another Photographer Feb 12, 2011 6:51 AM (in response to Another Photographer)Assuming that LR cannot tell you whether a validation hash is present, is there another Adobe product that does tell you? I tried both Bridge and Adobe DNG Converter, and neither one seemed to provide this information. Are third party apps the only way to do this, and if so which ones?

john beardsworth Feb 12, 2011 6:53 AM (in response to Another Photographer)Further to Ian's answers, apart from #2 I can't think of any other app that can return those properties. They're all kind-of useful / interesting, though perhaps still on the geekish rather than the practical side of metadata handling.

4. Re: LR and DNG support within LR
Another Photographer Feb 12, 2011 7:24 AM (in response to Another Photographer)Thank you. My reason for wanting to know whether a validation hash is present is as follows: I plan to start using Vuescan, which can produce DNG files. I thought this would be a great way to introduce validation in the workflow, but I haven't found out yet whether Vuescan produces a hash or not--I understand that this is not really a requirement of the DNG format, especially since earlier versions did not support it. Note that I cannot use Adobe DNG Converter to add the hash, because Vuescan has the capability of producing 4-channel scans where the fourth channel is the infrared channel, which is the way I intend to use it. I tried running one of those 4-channel DNG files through ADC and the fourth channel was stripped out. (So much for ADC preserving all of the underlying data, btw!)

5. Re: LR and DNG support within LR
Another Photographer Feb 12, 2011 8:10 AM (in response to john beardsworth)The practical reason is that I'm using Vuescan, which has the ability to produce DNG files and it would be awesome if those files had a validation hash. I thought the easiest way to find out was to check the files themselves!
Sorry for the double post; the forum is playing tricks on me today.
