1. Re: updating links...not!
Stix Hart Feb 11, 2011 8:45 PM (in response to Canned Pug)Unfortunately your memory is playing tricks on you...
You do have to save before Indesign can use the new one. Apart from the fact that "that is just how it works" until you save the data into the link that Indesign is looking at how the heck could Indesign know what changes you've made? As far as Indesign is concerned it's still the same ol' link it always was. The changes are stored in the other program's RAM (don't quote me, might be the scratch files..?) until you do a save.

P Spier Feb 12, 2011 2:29 PM (in response to Canned Pug)If the artwork is modified using Edit Original or Edit With, the update is automatic when you save it and return to ID. If you modifiy it without invoking Edit Original, select the link and click the update button.

6. Re: updating links...not!
Stix Hart Feb 12, 2011 5:45 PM (in response to Canned Pug)But it won't update if you haven't done a save while working in the other editor. To make it clear, a save doesn't mean closing a document, it just means pushing the save button, or the save command under the File menu, or going Ctrl + S.

Canned Pug Feb 19, 2011 1:05 PM (in response to Stix Hart)Update...When I make a change in a file and save it, and I go back to the ID file and choose the updated file (clicking on it), it updates automatically without having to go to the links palette and clicking on "update link". I thought so. Whatever...
