Again, here is another screen shot. I have tried everything suggested in the former post. I'm assuming that when I save, close then reopen, the preferences are reset? Or do I have to manually toss them?
Yes. Go back and read the link I posted to resetting your preferences. Also check that it doesn't have any effect at all applied to it.

Stix Hart Feb 23, 2011 1:48 PM (in response to Canned Pug)If it's OK in another file then to the file it's not OK in do this remembering that in CS5 you use idml not inx.

4. Re: Back to Sq. One...filling a rectangle w/ color
Canned Pug Feb 23, 2011 1:52 PM (in response to Stix Hart)I'm in CS3...and yes I didn't want to have to replace the prefs if not nec. Another thing I noticed that the grad was color-to-clear, not color-to-white, which ID won't do automatically...I have created several though elsewhere in the document (color to clear).
I'll read through that link...thanks.

5. Re: Back to Sq. One...filling a rectangle w/ color
Canned Pug Feb 23, 2011 1:56 PM (in response to Stix Hart)OK, I"m not getting this...I open my file (of 90 pgs) and then try to export that as another file? So that will be essentially duplicating the original and won't change the original? I'm not getting what to do then..do I have to go proofreading the whole thing then and compare changes?

Canned Pug Feb 23, 2011 1:58 PM (in response to Stix Hart)sorry...rereading...and yes it's a new file but what about effects that were done in the later version that can't be done in the earlier one?

7. Re: Back to Sq. One...filling a rectangle w/ color
Stix Hart Feb 23, 2011 1:59 PM (in response to Canned Pug)Seeing you're in CS3 you export your file to inx.
Then you open that inx file in CS3 and save it as an indd document, not overwriting your original.
Then you see if you still have the problem.

Canned Pug Feb 23, 2011 2:09 PM (in response to Stix Hart)ok, never done exporting. I'm in the open file and go to File>Export
and this is what I get:

In CS3 it's listed as "InDesign Interchange" in the dropdown list.
One way to go from color to clear in a gradient is to us color to paper, then set the mode to multiply, but you won't get the same purity of color -- it will mix with anything behind it.

15. Re: Back to Sq. One...filling a rectangle w/ color
Canned Pug Feb 23, 2011 4:25 PM (in response to P Spier)So aside from my other problems, if I want my gradient to use the
paper color, (or in this case a background color on the bottom layer),
would it be better to let ID make the color-to-clear gradient or
import it as a tif? Six of one?

17. Re: Back to Sq. One...filling a rectangle w/ color
P Spier Feb 23, 2011 4:39 PM (in response to Canned Pug)I haven't been following this thread terribly closely, so I'm not sure just what you want to do. I have a feeling that the reason you aren't seeing the fill on that object is that you are in Overprint Preview, and it's set to non-printing inthe attributes panel, but I can't swear to it without seeing the actual file. Is ther a background behind the gradient that needs to show on the light end? If not, set the gradient for 100% tint on one end and 0% tint of the same color on the other. If you need the background to show, I'd use a solid fill of the dark color and apply a gradient feather.

Canned Pug Feb 24, 2011 9:58 AM (in response to P Spier)Peter,
the overprint doesn't seem to matter, and in some areas I can fill the box and others not...and some make gradations...weird... just here in one file, 3 different responses...wondering that it's reacting funny with the white background somehow. ..but instead of beating this horse I guess I should do some trashing...thanks for your help.

19. Re: Back to Sq. One...filling a rectangle w/ color
Mr. Met Feb 24, 2011 10:18 AM (in response to Canned Pug)Probably overkill, but have you thought of reinstalling ID - not the entire suite - just indesign. If you go that route, use the uninstaller so it removes everything.

If you don't try trashing your prefs you'll never ever know. And if you read that link you can do it so you can restore them again if that doesn't make any difference. There's no point us suggesting fixes if you're not prepared to try them.
