The last line in the amt3.log file is:

2011-02-24 10:02:54 [2744]  AUMService: Get LEID xml call

The local profile gets past this line.

See if you can find any of eclipse's own logs available, that might provide more clues about the source of the error. You might find a log in eclipse's configuration folder, and then see if there's also a log in your workspace folder, under /.metadata/.log

Also, if you send me your full amt3.log file as an attachment, I'll scan it for suspect entries. You can send it to cagruss (at adobe dot com).

No errors are showing in the AMT log, and it's reporting a valid license.

If you try launching the bundled copy of eclipse that came with FB4 Plug-in, instead of the one you have under c:\eclipse, does that run successfully?

That would help narrow it down, though I expect you'd rather run with your own copy of eclipse.

No, that one does not run successfully either.

If i let someone else log into my computer, they can run both versions of eclipse fine.

I ended up renaming my profile folder by appending "_OLD" and renaming their profile folder to my login name (We do not have roaming profiles).  I then logged in and i could successfully open eclipse and work again.  Unfotunatley it stopped working again this morning.  I do not know what is causing this problem.  Any other ideas for troubleshooting this?

Have you already tried changing the default eclipse workspace, to use a path in some other location instead of within your user home profile folder?

Also, what's the name of your user profile? I want to make sure there are no chars in that path that could cause problems.

The workspace was a new workspace at C:\temp.  My user name is JTM so that shouldn't be a problem.  I also have adobe master collection CS 4 installed on this same machine, i don't know if something else in there could be causing the problem.

If you're on Vista or Win7, check your Virtual Store and make sure there are no old Adobe files cached there. If so, you should be able to delete them safely, and then see if that helps gets past the error.

I've tracked it down to my profiles "C:\Documents and Settings\jtm\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\AAMUpdater\1.0\AdobeupdaterPrefs.dat" File.

If <LastDateCheck> is missing it crashes.!!!

If <LastDateCheck is > 24 hours old, it crashes!!!

Seriously??? WTF???  I've wasted 5 days on the crap.  You guys should reimburse me.

Here are the steps to reproduce.

1. install flash Builder plugin on XP SP3 machine

At our work, we are not allowed to update software ourselves.  The IT Department has to approve it first.  So do the following to disable updates:

2. After install disable updates by removing this entry from startup:

AdobeAAMUpdater-1.0    Adobe Updater Startup Utility    Adobe Systems Incorporated    c:\program files\common files\adobe\oobe\pdapp\uwa\updaterstartuputility.exe

3. Remove ALL Adobe update task from task scheduler There will either be one or two task and they will look like this:

AdobeAAMUpdater-1.0-NA-6C290D781A38-jtm.job    Adobe Updater Startup Utility    Adobe Systems Incorporated    c:\program files\common files\adobe\oobe\pdapp\uwa\updaterstartuputility.exe

4. Modify AdobeupdaterPrefs.dat located at "C:\Documents and Settings\jtm\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\AAMUpdater\1.0\AdobeupdaterPrefs.dat" so that LastDateCheck is >24 hours in the past, or delete the LastDateCheck element all together.

5. Reboot

6. Start Eclipse and watch Flash Builder fail miserably.

Great sleuthing - thanks for narrowing that down so well. I'll talk with our Product Manager to see if we can provide you with some form of comp that would help offset the time you've spent with this.

I'll also escalate this to the installer Update team to make sure they know about it, and to make sure they've fixed it for future releases. If you'd be willing to send me any of your other log files available, that will help make sure they can reproduce the problem. I suspect there might be other subtle dependencies with that configuration too, in addition to <LastDateCheck> being >24 hours, or else all CS5 apps would be experiencing an epidemic of these particular crashes on WinXP.

More info here on where to find the other logs:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/834/cpsid_83481.html

Lastly, would you check the version number of this dll:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4 Plug-in\eclipse\plugins\com.adobe.flexide.amt_4.0.1.277662\os\win32\x86\updaternotifications.dll

There was a known bug with that in the original CS5 release, that was fixed in FB 4.0.1, so I want to make sure you already have the latest version of that dll.

Many thanks,

-Chris

I just emailed you the log files i could find.

The version of updaternotifications.dll:  1.0.0.68

I was able to reproduce the problem in a clean XP SP3 virtual machine (with nothing installed on it), and a fresh install of FlexBuilder plugin.

Just remove the AdobeAAMUpdater startup entry and scheduled task.  Change/remove the <LastDateCheck> and reboot and start eclipse.

The Adobe master collection that we have a license for is CS4 so i can't test any other CS5 apps.

I used the steps listed above on my own WinXP/SP3 machine, but wasn't able to reproduce the crash. I have no doubt that you're experiencing the crash, but apparently there are more dependencies involved. For example, have you applied all of Microsoft's Critical Updates for WinXP/SP3, such as their recommended security and reliability patches, or are you using SP3 unchanged since it was released in April 2008?

Also, when you install FB4 Plug-in, are you using an account that's a member of that machine's Administrators group, or are you using one of the other account types, such as Power Users, or Users? By the same token, when you run FB4 Plug-in (eclipse), what WinXP account permission type are you using?

One thing that was slightly different for me was Step #3, because I only ever found one Adobe entry under Scheduled Tasks, and had already deleted it in Step #2.

Another thing I noticed is that the entry in Scheduled Tasks would re-appear after I launched Flash Builder 4 Plug-in (eclipse), and invoked the Help menu item named "Check for Flash Builder Updates...", so a more permanent solution would be to disable that item in the Task Scheduler, instead of deleting it. That way it won't be replaced and re-enabled again if someone should happen to invoke the FB Update dialog inadvertently.

Alternatively, you could invoke the Update dialog from within Eclipse right after installing, and then use its Preference settings to disable notification about FB4 updates. However, all of the above carries some risk, because you'd lose the opportunity to be notified automatically about critical updates in the future, such as security patches. Perhaps a better alternative would be to allow the Updater to notify you, but not install anything until after receiving IT approval.

If your IT group wants more complete control over Adobe updates, there are various tools available for that, such as the one described here:

http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/creativesuite/pdfs/UpdateServerSetupTool_TechNote.pdf

Chris,

I made a video capture on a Clean XP SP3 box with all the latest updates and patches as of 2/28/2011.  You can watch the video here, it shows exactly how to reproduce the problem.  You should be able to reproduce the problem everytime following the video.

Thanks for posting the video screen capture. From watching it, I gather that you're always installing and running as a member of the Admins group.

The other thing I learned from the video is that you're disabling the UpdaterStartupUtility from running at startup via the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe). I knew from your Step 2 earlier that you were disabling this, but wasn't sure which approach you were using for it. This gave me something new to try, when attempting to reproduce the crash.

Even when I followed your steps exactly though, based on the video, I was still able to keep launching FB4 Plug-in without encountering the crash. Next, I tried a couple dozen variations on those same steps, still without hitting the error.

The only way I was able to get it to throw an error was by manually entering a corrupt date format in AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat. I got the idea for that while watching your video, because it appeared at one point that you had entered a date and timestamp like this: 2011-02-28T24:54:05. I had assumed the hour portion of the timestamp must always be less than 24, so wanted to see how the Updater handled it. FB4 did throw an error about the improperly formed date, but it didn't crash, so even then was able to recover and keep running.

I'm still at a loss for why you're seeing that error, and I'm not able to reproduce it. Possibly it has something to do with the security settings you have configured. Another way we could track this down is by analyzing the logs that get written alongside AdobeUIpdaterPrefs.dat, of the format aam*.log. Perhaps you could zip those up and send them to me, right after you get one of the crashes?

Thanks,

-Chris

Yes, I tried it both ways: with the scheduled task disabled, and also with the scheduled task deleted (the way you had in your original Step 3).

I have a hunch that your AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat file may have some corruption by now, on systems where you've been using the steps shown in the video, so you could also give it a try by completely removing your AAMUpdater/1.0/ folder, and then let the Updater recreate that tree from scratch. In the video, I noticed some settings missing from the dat file, when you were manually manipulating the LastDateCheck value.

It's useful to launch twice after removing the 1.0 folder, before running further tests, because it uses some custom bootstrapping on first launch, and then settles into a regular routine from the second launch onward.

Another thing I noticed in your video is that you didn't open the Updater Preferences, to disable update notification that way. I tried that both ways too, without crashing, but believe that it's a lot more straightforward to disable notifications with our provided UI instead.

To invoke the Updater Preferences, use Help > Search for Flash Builder Updates... > Preferences. In that dialog, deselect all 3 checkboxes. That will automatically remove the Scheduled Task, and conversely will add it back if you re-enable these settings later.

If you do that first, before turning off the scheduled tasks and startup items, does that prevent the crashes you're experiencing?

Thank you so much for posting this problem and hunting down the cause.  I just started having this problem today.  Unbelievable.  I am SO damn glad that once I'm done programming this last major feature (1 week), we are dropping Flex & Flash Builder.   I will never ever again consider using an Adobe tool to create anything.  In fact, I'd leave my job without a new one lined up if I was told to continue using this incredibly sloppy piece of junk (FB 6).  And we are supposed to trust that Adobe is going to be supportive of open source Flex ?    OMG what a joke.
