1. Re: Do I even want a Wide Gamut Monitor 2011?
Lundberg02 Feb 26, 2011 2:50 PM (in response to Cindy-)Wasn't the default monitor profile issue fixed in 10.6.6?
You won't have a problem with Windows.

Cindy- Feb 26, 2011 3:05 PM (in response to Lundberg02)I don't know if the default monitor profile was fixed in 10.6.6. That is why I am posting the question.

3. Re: Do I even want a Wide Gamut Monitor 2011?
Cindy- Feb 27, 2011 3:05 PM (in response to Cindy-)I did find a really compelling reason I should have a wide gamut. It is that the colors are already there and I just can't see them with my CRT. So perhaps I might want to see what is really there rather than what should be there. Just a thought.

craig cheatham Feb 27, 2011 4:14 PM (in response to Cindy-)You say, "If the Dell U2410 cannot be calibrated easily to show web sites..."
You should calibrate the monitor so that it "accurately" displays within a given color space.
I don't think you can be overly concerned about how well it displays web pages, since few web sites are designed to with color accuracy in mind.
Most browser default configuration is for color management to be turned off, if the browser has color management capability at all.
Wide gamut will help with your Photoshop work, print or web.
Others surely have opinions, but I don't think your primary concern can be whether or not your monitor is displaying a web page accurately.

5. Re: Do I even want a Wide Gamut Monitor 2011?
Cindy- Feb 28, 2011 1:01 PM (in response to craig cheatham)I think I have decided to get the Dell U2410. I will order direct from Dell to get the latest rev. but I have to wait for one of their sales again. It was between that and the NEC LCD2490WUXi2 which is a sRGB monitor. It I think is now being phased out but I can pick up one of those for $700. I think the Dell would be better for several reasons. Cost and newer technology. The new full gamut NEC is out of my budget.

charles badland Feb 28, 2011 1:39 PM (in response to Cindy-)I noticed Gary Ballard has not posted here in a while. But he may have some updated information on the wide gamut monitors and Mac.
http://www.gballard.net/photoshop/srgb_wide_gamut.html
You may want to drop him a line to confirm where this issue stands.

7. Re: Do I even want a Wide Gamut Monitor 2011?
Cindy- Feb 28, 2011 1:51 PM (in response to charles badland)That is the article that got me going. Gary Ballard does not recommend a Wide Gamut. He recommends the NEC LCD2490WUXi2. So who do I believe. He has always been very respected in the color dept. So if anyone has anything to add to this it sure would be appreciated.

charles badland Feb 28, 2011 2:07 PM (in response to Cindy-)That page is pretty old. He seems pretty open to contact. (although I in no way know or speak for GBallard) If I were you, I would drop him a short email asking if he knows if the Wide Gamut Monitor issue has changed with latest Mac OS.

9. Re: Do I even want a Wide Gamut Monitor 2011?
Cindy- Feb 28, 2011 2:24 PM (in response to charles badland)Hi Charles,
If you scroll down to about the middle of the article, in red under "My Main Point" you will find this: "There really is not a solution to this problem on a Mac (as of Jan/2011)... I returned my wide gamut monitor and bought a "standard gamut" monitor for my professional color work."
So, here I am back at square one. I really am not sure what to do. Maybe wait.

charles badland Feb 28, 2011 3:08 PM (in response to Cindy-)You're a more thorough reader than I.
Good luck with your choice.
(I too had a Lacie Electron 22 Blue IV at work. I replaced it with refurbished 30" Apple Cinema Display - the older style with the non-glare screen.)

12. Re: Do I even want a Wide Gamut Monitor 2011?
Lundberg02 Feb 28, 2011 4:04 PM (in response to Cindy-)The issue is this: The Mac OS, if it hasn't been fixed interprets untagged as monitor profile. Many web images are untagged because people do not know what the hell they are doing. Windows interprets untagged as sRGB. If you even care, see them in Windows, tag them, or just del with the fact that they look red until Apple fixes their OS, which they may have done in 10.6.6. I can't run 10.6 yet so I don't care, but I would buy a WG in a minute if I could afford it right now. How much is the Dell? I just bought a Dell 2320L LED LCD for 230 and its RGB is already slightly better than sRGB because of the better reds of LED vs CCFL.
Why would anyone want to do serious color work without being able to see the widest gamut available?
Ballard worries about his own web work, but 90% of the people who see his sRGB stuff are seeing it wrong anyway.

13. Re: Do I even want a Wide Gamut Monitor 2011?
Lundberg02 Feb 28, 2011 4:14 PM (in response to Lundberg02)Amazon has them for 530.
The Dell has an sRGB mode so quit worrying. My experience with Dell factory cai is that you don't even need to calibrate, it installs its cal profile in Displays and you're ready to go. Just switch between the two profiles if you need to.

14. Re: Do I even want a Wide Gamut Monitor 2011?
Cindy- Feb 28, 2011 4:26 PM (in response to Lundberg02)If I wait Dell puts the 24" on special occasionally for $450 (IPS)
Their sRGB 24" is only 1900x1020. I want 1900x1200

15. Re: Do I even want a Wide Gamut Monitor 2011?
Lundberg02 Feb 28, 2011 4:36 PM (in response to Lundberg02)Read this review from the Brits:
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2410.htm
They didn't like the factory cal too much but felt that the unit could be calibrated to excellent delta -es.
I was disappointed to discover that the U2410 is an enhanced CCFL and not an LED, although the gamut is 102% of NTSC.
The reviewer felt that the claimed contrast ratios wer far from correct.

Actually, I updated it recently with Firefox 3.6 notes, other than that, this post contains my latest comment on W-G panels:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/3384652
Chris Cox noted in post 6:
MacOS 10.6 uses sRGB for untagged images/graphics, and converts to the profile for each display - much like Photoshop does.
And in his post 2:
MacOS 10.6 does some automatic color magagement - so you won't get super-saturated colors on wide gamut monitors.
However, I don't need a W-G monitor to observe that behavior (post 6) simply is NOT happening here (10.6.6, Safari 5) — at least on my 'standard' gamut Apple Sony NEC monitors — so while I wonder what Chris was talking about, I would refer the OP to Chris' posts on the subject because he has W-G monitors in use and knows a lot more than I ever will.

gator soup Mar 7, 2011 12:24 PM (in response to gator soup)PS:
I will add a note about the sRGB Preset on the Del W-G monitor I tested on 10.5x — it got rid of the red issues on untagged-unmanaged sRGB, but was pretty useless unless as a fix unless you like your monitor to look (literally) like a worn out CRT monitor...

19. Re: Do I even want a Wide Gamut Monitor 2011?
Lundberg02 Mar 10, 2011 2:09 PM (in response to charles badland)My googtensive research seems to indicate that you would want a TN panel monitor with enhanced CCFL backlight for cheapness and response speed, for video work. For static images, you would want an IPS panel with RGB LED backlight for viewing angle and gamut.
Good luck prying that info out of the ads.
