Bill Hunt Mar 1, 2011 11:11 AM (in response to cjacs987654)Chris,
I agree with Harm. AE CS5 has added the RotoBrush, and it should make what you want much easier. Here is some BACKGROUND.
There are several ways to handle the final, such as using ADL (Adobe Dynamic Link) to get the "knockout" image into PrPro, and placing it over the original footage. Then just add a Blur to the original, with the un-Blurred AE version on top. One couuld also Blur the background Video holding that Effect out of the knockout of the person.
Good luck,
Hunt

Thanks

cjacs987654 Mar 2, 2011 1:57 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Bill
thanks for the idea. I was aware of rotobrush but never used it yet. Will check out your link
Do you know of any example training videos on the subject. I assume I need to 'split' the screen into 2 layers, background and subject foreground
so i can work on them seperately
Is it safe to say that whatever effects are available in Prem Pro, are in AE ?
Thanks again
Chris

cjacs987654 Mar 2, 2011 7:39 AM (in response to cjacs987654)Hi Guys
I have been working in AE and now have a rotobrush of my foreground. Viewed a number of videos on you tube and adobe.tv to get there.
Now i need to know how to 'separate' into 2 layers if thats what i need to do so i can apply effects to just the background
Any help or pointers to videos etc most welcome
Regards
Chris

8. Re: How do i get part of screen blurred
Colin Brougham Mar 2, 2011 7:50 AM (in response to cjacs987654)The Rotobrush creates a mask on your layer, so you're essentially cutting out your foreground subject. You then put the original video clip behind the masked layer, and add your effects to that.

Bill Hunt Mar 2, 2011 8:50 AM (in response to cjacs987654)Chris,
Good news.
Colin has handled your next step. For the Clip, that will be your background, I'd look at each of the Effects>Blur & Sharpen>Blur. Each is a little different, so your sense of aesthetics will likely dictate which one does the job that you want.
Good luck,
Hunt

Thanks again for your replies.
I have 2 layers now, (with same footage on each), one with rotobrush the other with a blur but im still stuck!
To isolate, if i switch off the blur layer and just play the roto layer, i still get the original footage not just the object i have drawn with rotobrush
If i edit the layer i see the outline ok so i think the drawing part worked - am i doing something wrong? do i need to apply it or something?
Also if i want to view both layers how do i do that, or if the above answer is sorted will that do it
Sorry guys the for many questions, tried searching for sample videos but no luck, as you can guess new to this!!
Thanks
Chris

Bill Hunt Mar 2, 2011 12:58 PM (in response to cjacs987654)Chris,
With the AE Rotobrush Comp, did you make sure to bring in the Alpha Channel?
Are you Exporting form AE, or are you using ADL (Adobe Dynamic Link) to get your Rotobrushed Comp into PrPro?
Sounds like you ae missing the Alpha Channel Mask, as you should only see the subject, that you knocked out with the Rotobrush. Then, when you add an Effect to the background Clip, you will see that Effect, everywhere BUT your subject.
Good luck, and let us know a bit more about your workflow, regarding that AE Comp.

Nope - how do i do that?
>Are you Exporting form AE, or are you using ADL (Adobe Dynamic Link) to get your Rotobrushed Comp into PrPro?
Im working in AE only until i get the hang of this. I import my footage then add it as a layer (twice) once with rotobrush
once with a blur effect - got the right blur effect for what i want - that looks great
>Sounds like you ae missing the Alpha Channel Mask, as you should only see the subject, that you knocked out with the Rotobrush. Then, when you add an Effect to the background Clip, you will see that Effect, everywhere BUT your subject.
Yes, thats make sense, as at the moment i can see the whole shot.

16. Re: How do i get part of screen blurred
Bill Hunt Mar 2, 2011 4:04 PM (in response to cjacs987654)When you do your Export from AE, you will want to probably use MS AVI and then choose "Millions+ of Colors" where the + is the Alpha Channel.
Are you doing SD, or HD? That will possibily direct you in your choice of Export format, but for an Alpha Channel, you do want Millions+.
Good luck,
Hunt

17. Re: How do i get part of screen blurred
shooternz Mar 2, 2011 4:07 PM (in response to Bill Hunt)...or he could complete the entire comp in AEFX where he will have more tools to be "creative" and not have to worry about the alpha export.

Todd_Kopriva Mar 10, 2011 9:44 PM (in response to cjacs987654)Sorry to come to this thread so late.
Here is a video that I created that shows how to use Roto Brush to selectively apply an effect to an actor's face:
https://www.video2brain.com/en/videos-1501.htm
You could adapt that to selectively apply any effect, such as a blur.
And here's one where I use motion tracking and conventional rotoscoping to do the same thing:

cjacs987654 Mar 11, 2011 1:27 AM (in response to Todd_Kopriva)Todd,
many thanks for your reply. I will take a look at that
I actually want to apply an effect to the part that is not roto ie roto a face, but have the effect applied to the rest, ie background
Is that possible - I assume i need a sort of 'inverse' option somewhere

I think that the answer will be clear to you once you actually watch the videos. When you do this sort of thing by overlaying one copy of a layer onto another, with the effect applied to one, you can just apply the effect to one or the other of the copies. When you're using a similar technique involving track mattes and adjustment layers, you can just invert the track matte.
This is getting into After Effects details, so it might be better if we take it to the After Effects forum:
http://forums.adobe.com/community/aftereffects_general_discussion
If you're going to do much in After Effects, I strongly recommend that you work your way through these materials:
