c.pfaffenbichler Mar 9, 2011 2:18 AM (in response to Canned Pug)I know RGB has a higher Gamut range, so from CMYK to RBG it must resample and vice-versa?
Your assumption is not completely correct.
Most conventional CMYK-spaces are smaller than most conventional RGB-spaces but this is not necessarily always the case.
Anyway, whenever you switch modes or spaces in 8bit every pixel’s color values in each channel (integers between 0 and 255) have to be fit into another space’s distribution of its 255 values per channel, so some rounding is likely to be necessary.
So with each conversion these rounding effects can add up.
This applies even to conversions to L*a*b, which some people seemed to claim were lossless some time ago.

Marian Driscoll Mar 9, 2011 5:30 AM (in response to Canned Pug)Note that you can work in RGB but proof/preview in CMYK without converting color modes.

4. Re: changing modes = degradation?
- JM - Mar 9, 2011 6:12 AM (in response to Canned Pug)real world scenario....
the biggest problem that you'd likely encounter is if you've spec'd a color in CMYK that doesn't fit within the RGB colorspace. This is common with packaging art etc, but less likely with photographs.
Create a CMYK file with 100% swatches of CMYK then do a "round trip" ... convert to RGB and the back again. Then resample the colors. The conversion process will push or pull the colors into the destination colorspace, the method/space will determine where these colors end up.
What you are doing, moving to RGB to accomplish a task/filter is common, but beware of the pitfalls.
