Anomalies in CS5 when using edit original on Illustrator files from within InDesign

    confused_again Community Member

Using the Edit Original function to open up a placed Illustrator file from an InDesign layout, we are seeing some strange things. If the image is placed on page at 100%, after editing via Edit Original it comes back in at a different size. Sometimes it is a silly size (99.999999999% or 100.000000002%), other times 2 or 3% smaller. Is anyone else seeing this - and, if so, is there a fix?

We are also experiencing this with .psd .ai .eps .jpg files etc. etc. etc.

          Example:

An image is placed in a box in InDesign, then resized and positioned. In a later stage the image needs editing, so the image is selected and we click on Edit Original. The image opens in either PS or ILL, we alter it (not sizewise, just color). Then we save it and the link in InDesign updates.

          BUT

The position and the scale of the image most often CHANGES.

CS5 is soo full of bugs, it is not even funny anymore. We are slowly moving our studio back to CS3.

In ID you have a choice on relink/update of preserving dimensions or preserving scale. It's not unlikely that your choice here, coupled with the crop options you chose when orinally placing the art, night cause a change in scale, particularly in Illustrator. If the original crop choice is to bounding box or art many different edits could affect the size of those boxes -- changing a stroke weight, adding point, deleting a stray point, etc., and if the choice was to preserve dimensions, ID is going to rescale so the new size of the box fits the old dimension.

Thanks for the response. A couple of points:

First, I am doing "edit Original" from within InDesign, so, as far as I know, there are no preferences I can choose that would influence the way in which the Illustrator file is read back in (unless I'm missing something?)

Second, the kinds of changes being made are corrections to spelling in words in the middle of the image - ie factors that are not going to affect the perceived size or scale of the image. As a result, I still don't unerstand why the image is being resized when I finish editing it....

The preference is in ID, and the crop choice is made when you initially placed the art (even if you didn't show import options -- the crop choice is sticky from the last time something was placed).

If you aren't making changes that would affect the size of the bounding boxes in any way, then that probably isn't what's happening. Are the amounts always as small as you mentioned? Those could be rounding errors in translation of units if you are working in different units in the two applications, perhaps. Does the size of the art actually seem to change onthe page?
