1. Re: Preflight check in CS5 dramatically slows down file opening
P Spier Mar 11, 2011 5:04 AM (in response to confused_again)Preflight does run in the background. Are you saying you are waiting after the file is open and visible, or are you waiting while ID verifies links prior to opening the file, which is a different problem entirely? What sort of problems are you having when you try to work on a file after it opens?

2. Re: Preflight check in CS5 dramatically slows down file opening
confused_again Mar 11, 2011 5:46 AM (in response to P Spier)What I am seeing is this: I open an InDesign file. The spread appears and all the objects placed on that layout appear, just as usual. Then I get the spinning beachball, which coincides with the preflight checking the file (you can see the word "checking" in the bottom left of the frame). The beachball stops and I can finally access the file once the preflight chack is complete. So, on that basis, it doesn't seem to be running in the background. Turning preflight off eliminates the problem. So yes, the file is open and visible, but I can't get at it until the preflight check is complete.
For reference, I am using OS 10.6.6 and InDesign 7.0.4.550.
Note that using the Basic preflight check, I don't get these problems, but using a custom profile, I do. I started trying to see if I could pinpoint what in the extra checks was causing the problem, but I failed: I took the basic profile, which works fine, and added the first extra check from my custom profile, which is to Check OPI Links in LINKS. I immediately got the slow down. But unchecking that in my custom profile, didn't speed things up, which suggests that it's more than one thing. If it helps, my custom profile is cheking for:
LINKS
Links missing or modfied
Inaccessible URLs
OPI Links
COLOUR
Transparency blending space
Colour spaces not alowed
Overprinting applied to white
Registration applied
IMAGES & OBJECTS
Image resolution
Interactive elements
TEXT
Overset text
Font missing
Glyph mising

What is your localization? There is no version 7.0.4 available that I can find directly from Adobe.

confused_again Mar 11, 2011 6:42 AM (in response to P Spier)I'm in the UK, but 7.0.4 is the latest version. I think you can pick the patch up through softaware updates in the program, not sure it's available as a download yet.

P Spier Mar 11, 2011 6:54 AM (in response to confused_again)Not showing up through the Adobe updater or the website here.....
Did some more research. Looks like build 755 is a beta product made available to solution partners. The usual caveats for betas apply.

7. Re: Preflight check in CS5 dramatically slows down file opening
confused_again Mar 11, 2011 6:59 AM (in response to P Spier)Build 550 is a rapid release patch issued at the end of February, and obtained through a support licence with one of Adobe's partners. It fixes:
- Anchored object fails to export to PDF or print if it is on a different page than its text frame
- Corner effects applied to an anchored object lost when we open a CS4 doc in CS5.
- InDesign shuts down when attempting to insert a table into a master text frame if Enable Layout Adjustment is turned on
- Nested anchored objects fail to draw in converted CS4 or earlier documents
- Tabs unexpectedly collapse in certain conditions when exported to PDF.

P Spier Mar 11, 2011 7:16 AM (in response to confused_again)OK. ...
Sounds like a new bug in the build to me

confused_again Mar 11, 2011 7:21 AM (in response to P Spier)If only. We actually applied the latest patch in the hope that it would REMOVE the problem....

10. Re: Preflight check in CS5 dramatically slows down file opening
P Spier Mar 11, 2011 7:35 AM (in response to confused_again)Never seen it reported before, as far as I can recall. Might be a conflict with something else. Other third party plugins?
