    Letters missing in pdf

    ajsdesigns21 Community Member

I placed a pdf ad that I received into an indesign cs4 newsletter. At that point the pdf looked fine. I then made a pdf (Press quality) of the newsletter and the pdf ad has missing letters. I have no idea how they made the original pdf ad. As I said, when I placed the pdf it looked fine, but when I made another pdf of the whole newsletter, the letters got all screwed up.

Any thoughts on why this happened? It's never happened before and I've been doing this for 8 years. Also, the entire ad is text. Do you think it's the advertisers problem and the way that they created their pdf, or my problem?

You did not mention that ID alerted to missing fonts during export, but the fonts may not be embedded in the pdf. What are the font properties in the pdf, embedded, subset or not at all?

Also, from the pdf properties, first tab (general), Application will give you a pretty good idea of the created with software.

btw, did you Export to PDF from ID (recomendded) or print to PDF?

ID did not alert me to any missing fonts when I exported it and I have no idea how the people who made the ad made their pdf. I exported it from ID. I'm thinking maybe they made their's print to pdf.

You did not mention if the fonts were embedded or what the creative app was for the ad.

Do you have Acrobat Std or Pro installed?

Acrobat - File > Properties > General Tab, Application = what, fonts tab, embedded?

Alternately, I've been known to place a pdf ad into ID and export it to clear problems like yours.
