Saad Khan Mar 28, 2011 5:36 PM (in response to JSS1138)Hi Jim,
my question is, 'how do I get my audio to sound more gutsy(more base, louder,) I'm not very good with describing things. Basically the oposite of what the customer was complaining about(noted earlier in my discussion).

Now I agree with her. One of my fellow editors who uses another system produced a video, and imediately I noticed how wonderful the sound was. I could feel the base and hear more of the instruments.

are you by any chance falling in love with the talent ? This is not unheard of in the film business...where criticism becomes a "personal" thing between the director / shooter ( you ) and the talent ..... ???
you could maybe get closer ?

Saad Khan Mar 28, 2011 8:21 PM (in response to able123)haha very funny.
Certainly not. :-) I've actually noticed it even before she mentioned something to me. Maybe I'm mistaken. You sound as though nothing should be wrong with my audio. Is that right? Judging from my settings.

7. Re: Audio sounding Dull & low - After export
Saad Khan Apr 13, 2011 7:04 PM (in response to JSS1138)Ok. I've fixed the issue myself.
I adjusted the levels so that it was
hitting just below the red, whereas before my levels were peaking at the -6 mark as pictured in my post. :-)

Bill Hunt Apr 14, 2011 8:06 AM (in response to Saad Khan)I feel that the meters and peaking are but guides. Obviously, they can warn you of issues, but with Audio, I feel that actual listening, on a calibrated system's monitors, or a good set of noise-cancelling headphones, is required. Yes, I do watch my meters, but I am concentrating about 90% on what I hear.
Good luck,
Hunt

Bill Hunt Apr 14, 2011 4:22 PM (in response to Saad Khan)You are most welcome.
Some folk get hung up on numbers, when doing audio editing. I think of the numbers as starting points, or guides. Sort of like winemaking - chemical levels, Brix, etc., can only tell a winemaker so much. At some point, one needs to get to tasting.
I work a lot with DD 5.1 SS, and the industry norm is -3 dB attenuation for the rear channels. Often, that works (there is even a Preset for that), but sometimes, it just does not sound "right." I might end up at -2 dB, or maybe even -3.8 dB. Just depends on the material, and my "vision."
Good luck, and hope that the Project goes well,
Hunt
