1. Re: non-destructive layer mask editing?
c.pfaffenbichler Apr 5, 2011 10:56 PM (in response to jaymcdonald)One option would be to create a Solid Color Layer with a Layer Mask, convert that to an SO and Clipping Mask the Layer that should be masked to that.
But you are right, Smart Masks would be an improvement.

Scott Falkner Apr 6, 2011 1:05 AM (in response to jaymcdonald)You can disable the layer’s mask, put the layer into a layer group (folder), then give the group a layer mask.

[scott] Apr 6, 2011 6:39 AM (in response to Scott Falkner)I often double mask by masking a layer, then placing it in a group to mask more.

4. Re: non-destructive layer mask editing?
jaymcdonald Apr 6, 2011 6:46 AM (in response to jaymcdonald)Hmmm. All of these would add a single extra layer of masking, and that is an improvment. It would be cool if the next version could do layers on masks. The UI might be a little tricky, but being able to stack up and turn on/off layers on a mask would be really nice.

mybrotherbob Apr 6, 2011 6:58 AM (in response to jaymcdonald)why not just save the previous versions as slpha channels

6. Re: non-destructive layer mask editing?
c.pfaffenbichler Apr 6, 2011 7:10 AM (in response to mybrotherbob)At how many alpha-channels you suppose one starts losing track of the various versions?
Of course a stringent naming policy can help there.

mybrotherbob Apr 6, 2011 7:20 AM (in response to c.pfaffenbichler)personally about 5 but i always forget to name stuff
. instead of alpha channels you could apply the previous selection to the layer mask of a neutral adjustment layer at least that way you could group them as V!, V2 eyc

8. Re: non-destructive layer mask editing?
jaymcdonald Apr 6, 2011 7:20 AM (in response to mybrotherbob)Well, you could save as alphas, but then you are still doing destructive edits and archiving them. Only now, they are removed from the layers palette, and it would be easier to forget what goes where. If I leave the copies in the layers palette and turn them off, at least I can group in folders or something - I have a clearer picture of what goes with what.
