    Upgrade to CS5 + InCopy!

    phyllisj9 Community Member

Hey, I finally got the upgrade to CS5!

I have a rush design job (our magazine, which is running late).  Should I immediately jump into CS5 for the next issue?  Or continue with CS4 until I've had a chance to play with the upgraded version?  I know there were some CS5 bugs for a while there, and I don't know what to expect.  Is there enough difference to warrant taking some extra time with it before using it for rush work?

Also, I'll soon be getting InCopy, which I've never even seen.  Our magazine's new editor (my new boss!) knows InCopy from a previous life and wants to have that level of access to edit the articles (sounds like that'll be a good thing for me, as I have to go through a million text edits every issue).  So from what I understand, I'll use InCopy to designate that articles be editable by him and the other editor on staff?  So they work on the text simultaneous to my working on the design?  I'm planning to watch the lynda.com series on InCopy before trying this -- any other resource recommendations?  I think our I.T. department was thinking only the editors need InCopy, but they can't use it without my working in it also, can they?

      Thanks, Phyllis

No...you will not use InCopy, the editor will. You will export content from InDesign.

And yes, Anne Marie's videos on InCopy workflow on Lynda will get you headed in the right direction.

Make sure InDesign and InCopy are both updated to 7.0.3

Okay thanks.  So it makes no difference if I don't have a copy of InCopy?  I don't know if they bought enough licenses, though I'll bug them to get another one just so I can learn it.

I'll get the updates.  Wish I could run the installer myself but always have to go through i.t. (sigh)........

You do not need InCopy and the editor does not need InDesign. That's the beauty of it.

Nice!  Of course something tells me I'm the one they'll come to with questions about how to use InCopy....

Bob's the InCopy expert here, but you also asked bout moving from CS4 to CS5.

For an extra margin of safety, it would probably be a good idea for any CS4 files that you want to convert to export them to .inx in CS4, then open the .inx in CS5 and save as new .indd files or new .indt templates, and don't overwrite the old ones. Porbably 99% plus of CS4 files will convert directly without a problem, but every once in a while somebody reports an issue with a file they converted, and it often doesn't show up until they've done days of editing and overwrtitten anything that could have been used for recovery. Converted .inx seems to be more reliable.

Thanks Peter and Bob!  Your comments are all very helpful!

Forgot to mention that the text engines are different from version to version. If you open a legacy file, the text will not reflow until you click in a frame, but if you open a .inx file it will all recompose when the file opens (which I think is a plus as it gets that out of the way and you know you need to examine the whole doc for new line breaks that might cause a problem).

Also, workspaces MIGHT transfer OK from one version tothe next, but shortcut sets will not and you'll need to rebuild those from scratch.

Trying to put together my preferred setup.  The first buggy thing I noticed is that character styles don't show everything in the Style Settings box (like I have a "No Break" style which shows nothing in the Style Settings box though the No Break box is checked and it's working).  Is that a known bug?

Haven't had a chance to get I.T. to run an upgrade for me yet but hope to later today....

Can you post a screen shot? Not sure I know what you're referring to.

I don't know of any bug similar to whatyou are describingh, but I'm not certain I know waht you're describing.

Are you saying you have a named style for No Break, and that that style is not showing as applied but the attributes are? Some screen caps, maybe? Are you sure the no break was applied as a style and not an override?

I wouldn't switch to CS5 in a rush. You don't say how rush is rush, but...I would wait until you have a few days.

Hey!  I was referring to this screen (above).  Usually, the Style Settings box shows me everything that's been applied.  In this example, it doesn't show me that "No Break" has been applied under one of the other tabs.  But the character style still works.  Maybe it's just because I don't have the upgrade to .03 or whatever the version is yet.

                                Thanks, Phyllis

You must update to 7.0.3. There were some pretty serious ID/IC workflow bugs in 7.0.0.
