mdubuque Apr 8, 2011 11:40 AM (in response to Bill Hunt)Thanks for the help fellas. This gives me a running start.
I'm using Adobe Regular font. My judgement is that it has serifs. I hate to part with that font; I like serifs generally.
My titles are moving across the screen and I plan to have four separate streams of them forming in a dancing rectangular frame on the side of the frame, streaming text in four different directions. I'm not sure I can pull this off in a week.
Given the fact that I am streaming this text, that seems to aggravate the issues. Therefore it seems I am forced to abandon all serif fonts for starters.
Am I constrained to the DV format by burnning to an Adobe Encore SD DVD?
I am not using dynamic link to import PrPro footage. Is that the best way to go?
Great article. At least I have several tools to play with.

mdubuque Apr 8, 2011 11:43 AM (in response to mdubuque)Actually, this is my first encore project. What I did was import from Encore and found a very recent version of my PrPro project, just as a test.
Is dynamic link superior? I would imagine so w/respect to automatic updating kind of thing, but is it also true w/respect to resolution and clarity?

Bill Hunt Apr 8, 2011 4:35 PM (in response to mdubuque)I hate to part with that font; I like serifs generally.
I feel your pain. For body text, serifs usually improve readability, but with Video, they can cause issues. They also impart a degree of elegance, unlike most sans-serif fonts.
If I use serif fonts in Video, they will usually be for main Titles, and the font will be large and bold.
Good luck,

Is it back to Helvetica purgatory?

Stan Jones Apr 8, 2011 5:52 PM (in response to mdubuque)Before you go to purgatory, respond to post 2 - if your export is less than optimal, you may be seeing worse results than you should. Yes, you will probably end of with the same conclusion, but perhaps not.
Also, 24p poses special problems; are you sure you exported it correctly?

mdubuque Apr 8, 2011 8:01 PM (in response to Stan Jones)Hi Stan,
By purgatory I mean adhering to the guidelines described in the outstanding link below Bill provided, including no serifs, 90% opacity, no pure black and white, no 100% IRE, etc.
http://library.creativecow.net/articles/hodgetts_philip/titles.php
I had very high hopes of a series of frames with four different colored streams of text going different directions surrounding the horizontal and vertical edges of the frame. But PrPro does not even offer vertical scrolling as near as I can tell.
So I've lowered my big ambitions in a New York hurry to meet the April 18 deadline I'm working with.
I was unaware of any special 24p issues and would love to hear your views. I'm exporting at 23.97 and it's likely, though not certain, I've exported correctly.
Nice to hear from you.

Stan Jones Apr 8, 2011 8:43 PM (in response to mdubuque)Oh, believe me, I understand purgatory, and worse! lol
But in addition to the several important issues in titles in that link, there are also basic issues of quality in export format, datarates, etc.
24p goes onto DVDs as 29.97 with pulldown. I do not think this is an issue for you, but that is one of the reasons why some focus on export settings is appropriate.
The best program for the motion you describe is After Effects. Not a difficult task with the text presets there, but I agree that you should get this one finished without the glitz.

mdubuque Apr 9, 2011 9:05 AM (in response to Stan Jones)Hi Stan, yes, I was aghast that my 24p footage was imported into SD by Encore as a 29.97 pulldown, but I managed, I believe to tweak an internal control that made it 24p.
But that was after the import was complete and I bet that this change played some role in the problem at hand, although the video portions of the film look far better than what I would have expected if a conversion had occurred between those two frame rates.
YES, After Effects sounds like a much better way to go. Conceptually it should not be too hard to learn this straightforward task in AE. I am new to that programme and for whatever reason more challenging than I would have expected, likely due to the UI.
I likely did gloss over the part of that post about datarates; I'll be sure to check that.
This is very helpful! AE now seems the obvious choice and I may be able to pull this off after all!

Stan Jones Apr 9, 2011 9:14 AM (in response to mdubuque)For after effects, go here:
http://www.adobe.com/support/aftereffects/
especially here:

and for text animation finally:

and examples/tutorials:

I list the first ones so you know they are there. Many text animations are basic text, and what you are doing may or may not be.

mdubuque Apr 9, 2011 10:00 AM (in response to Stan Jones)Thanks Stan!
I've just been watching the "Text Animation" portion of the fantastic Peachpit/Adobe "Video2Brain" series of instructional videos on AfterEffects I purchased just in case I needed it.
Whoa, the variety of text animation effects and their power is jaw-dropping. I had no idea.
My goal isn't that advanced here. I just want four different tinted data streams of text in various parts of the frame to stream in different directions, including vertically.
I just might be able to pull this off and you have been supremely helpful.
I'll check out those links and I know I can always move over to the AE forum for help.
Geez. Thanks for the game changer!
