What's the best way to move a project from my hard drive to someone else's hard drive?

I've read lots of related discussions concerning problems after copying/importing/whatever, so I want to avoid those.  I have worked on a project since its inception.  It is currently in RoboHelp 8 HTML with several dozen LINKED Word documents and a couple of PDFs.Someone else is about to take over maintenance.  What's the recommended sequence, please?

Assuming the project is not under any form of source control, simply copy the source to a shared drive and let your colleague know when it is available. Just make sure they copy it to a local drive before they edit anything.

Where are those linked files? I suspect they may need to be relinked after the move. Also I would recommend zipping it and putting the zip copy on the shared drive for download onto the target machine.

Peter, the linked files are in a different folder on my hard drive and will be moved to the other hard drive when the project is moved.  Is there any way to avoid re-linking?  I want to make it as painless as possible for the other person, since she is not familiar with RoboHelp yet.  She only expects to update some Word files and re-publish once a quarter.

As a follow-up to my previous response, would it help if I put the Word docs in the same folder as the project and re-link before moving?

Not trying or wanting to step on Peter's toes here, but I've not seen this mentioned.

When you link Word documents you have two different ways of accomplishing it. Which you choose will depend on how you wish the ongoing maintenance of the Word document to proceed.

If you choose to simply link, the document is maintained in perhaps a network location by a third party. Assuming that you moved the project, you may need to re-link so the relationship can be maintained.

If you choose the "link and copy" way of linking, the Word document is copied to the RoboHelp project. This normally means you wish the content to still reside in Word, but the RoboHelp author then makes any changes moving forward by editing the Word document. Because the document is now actually part of the project and resides in the project structure, you may freely copy the project to other locations without the risk of imacting the link relationship.

Hopefully this helps better shed some light on the subject.

"Link and copy" sounds good to me, but I must be minusderstanding some part of the process.  I created a small project with just a few of the same files.  I opened the Project Settings and changed the Link Option from "Create a Reference" to "Create a Copy and Link."  After saving everything, generating and publishing, I opened one of the pages in the TOC and modified it.  When I saved and updated, that page returned to its original text.  What am I missing, please?

On whether or not the link will break, you will have to test that. Rick hasn't seen it happen. I did have it happen when someone else sent me zips of a project that included the linked document.

You can change a topic from a linked document but if you do an update, that is telling RoboHelp to change the topic to whatever is currently in the document. You need to change the document and update. Hoping I have understood what you are doing.
