how do I change the size of a text area/box?

      Hi-

I haven't played with Illustrator since around v6.  Now I have CS5/OSX and so much is different that I have to ask questions about the basics.

I want some text to fit in a specific area so I drag with the Text tool to make a box the width I need it.  I type in my text and now find that the box is too big.  It doesn't matter whether I want to make it narrower or shorter - How do I change it's size and shape???

I tried the Select tool (black arrow), the Direct Select tool (white arrow) and the Text tool.  All I succeed in doing is moving the box around the layout.

I tried the Free Transform tool and wound up distorting the text.

It's a simple thing.  I'm sure I used to be able to do it in Illustrator 6.  Please tell me how to change the size of a text area.  I'm assuming this will have an affect on the way the text wraps.

      TIA some help
